Okay, here's the latest song I'm working on.

Here's the story: I was on an extended business trip to the Georgia coast, and I had to go to Walmart to get some things. It was dark, and a chilly ocean breeze sprayed salt through the air. A light rain was falling, and, as is my habit, I had my truck windows open to enjoy nature as much as I could. I passed the local mall on the way, and in the dark, through the rain, I saw the neon lights of a cheap carnival - the kind with a dozen or so rides, hard-voiced carnie barkers, and sticky-faced children. Somehow, the scene was frightening in a spiritual sense, as if something Dark was alive in the rides, waiting to pull me in. I could almost hear the low, raspy voice, saying "C'mon, boy, step inside... What? Are you..... afraid?" and drawing out the last word like a blade sliding along bone.

So, thoroughly invested with the heebie-jeebies, I shook it off as best I could and made my way to WallyWorld. When I got back to my hotel that night, I wrote these lines:

CARNIVAL*

Carnival
A place where a man can hide
Beneath the garish lights
Selling your soul one piece at a time

Carnival
Is it just an arcane ride
Promises delights
Sell your soul at the carnival

Carnival
Lights in a rain swept night

I'm working on the music. I hope to have it all written by the end of the week, and be done recording by Sunday. We'll see - and y'all will be the first to hear :)

Thanks, Victoria. I've been trying to fix some things on my profile page. Some of the photos at the top aren't centered perfectly, and those gaps underneath some of the photos (above the captions) have returned. :-(

I had to wait a while before responding to this.

I still have a lump in my throat, but at least I'm not (currently) running the risk of crying all over my keyboard (not a good thing, when one uses a laptop)...

Thankyou for those words of comfort. They were, indeed, comforting. With your permission, I may copy them into my diary tonight...

Gratefully yours, Kangaroo Jacqui.

I hope you didn't miss the fact that Amy did a pretty good job of coming up with an illustration for turning Australia upside-down.

It was later in the thread. Sorry about my confusion over Queensland.

Like many here, I have always been curious about Australia, but I have never travelled there. I had an Army buddy who went around the world. He had many good tales about his visit to Australia.

That is soooo cute! I enjoyed jumping rope as a child. I bought a rope a few years ago to lose weight, but we won't talk about that. Jumping rope is supposed to be great for losing weight.

Thank you, Victoria. That is very sweet of you.

My temp is 99.2, my throat is feeling better but I gargled with salt water last night. I'll do that again tonite. Supposed to go to the graduation of a friend's daughter tomorrow, hope I can still go.

See you later.

I’m the one called "Doc"

I shall not walk in your footsteps,
but I will walk by your side.
I shall not walk in your image,
I’ve earned my own title of pride.

We’ve answered the call together,
on sea and foreign land.
When the cry for help was given,
I’ve been there right at hand.

Whether I am on the ocean
or in the jungle wearing greens,
Giving aid to my fellow man,
be it Sailors or Marines.

So the next time you see a corpsman
and you think of calling him "squid",
think of the job he’s doing
as those before him did.

And if you ever have to go out there
and your life is on the block,
Look at the one right next to you...
I’m the one called "Doc".
