For centuries, disease has been used as a weapon; a strategically placed corpse infected with the plague can bring down an enemy’s village in a matter of weeks. Nowadays, with all that modern technology has to offer, deadly viruses and bacteria can be easily engineered in sufficient quantities to bring down adversaries on a much grander scale. Crops, livestock, water, milk and air can become contaminated in one fell swoop to sicken, impair and kill masses in just a matter of weeks.
Although many governments have agreed to stop developing, producing or stockpiling bioweapons, lethal biological agents can be found in labs worldwide. And it’s not just governments that acquire bioweapons and architect attacks; rogue saboteurs don’t need many resources to carry out attacks. That’s because many deadly pathogens exist in nature and can be easily and cheaply cultivated without the aid of high-tech laboratories. That puts the government, the public and public health officials in a precarious position of constant heightened alert for a bioterror attack.
Bioweapons 101
Some pathogens are particularly good weapons because they are highly infective and can fly under the radar to infect and sicken many before the cause is known. It may take days or weeks before an attack is confirmed, enough time for many people die before treatment can be administered.
You may not be able to prevent an attack, or know that you have been infected, but being mindful of symptoms and proactively reporting them to officials may save your life and the lives of many others.
The government has practices in place to protect and prepare the public. But it may not be in time to save some victims.
Here are a few notable pathogens used as bioweapons.
Anthrax
Anthrax is a disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis. These bacteria have developed a unique survival mechanism that allows them reproduce asexually via spores. The spores are hardy and can survive in soil for months, even years, in extreme weather conditions. Typically, anthrax develops in animals when they come in contact with dormant spores living in the soil while grazing. When spores are inhaled or ingested they become activated and alive again.
Humans acquire the anthrax infection by direct skin contact with the spores, by eating infected animals or breathing in spores (human to human infection is not likely). Anthrax that has been prepared as a bioweapon is dense with spores and looks like white powder. You may remember the 2001 anthrax attack that killed 5 people when they inhaled spores mailed through the US Postal Service.
While an anthrax vaccine is available, it is only routinely given to people at high exposure risk such as military personnel and scientists working with the organism. Infections are treated with antibiotics.
Symptoms of anthrax occur anywhere from a few hours to 7 days after exposure.
* If inhaled: flu-like symptoms – fever, aches, fatigue, nonproductive cough, chest discomfort, breathing difficulties, sweating, and blue lips and extremities
* If eaten: nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, vomiting of blood, and severe diarrhea
* If on skin: itching, depressed black scar, redness and swelling
Plague
The plague is caused by the bacteria Yesinia pestis and is found on rodents and their fleas. There are two types; pneumonic plague where the bacteria enter the lungs via air droplets from close contact with an infected person or animal, and bubonic plague that enters the blood stream via infected fleas.
Symptoms of the inhaled plague occur 2-3 days after exposure and up to 10 days if bloodborne. They include:
* If inhaled: Fever, headache, weakness, shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and bloody or watery sputum
* If in blood: Flea bites, malaise, fever, painful lymph nodes
Botulism
Botulism is a foodborne illness caused by a toxin made by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. While minute amounts may be therapeutic when they paralyze isolated muscles for neuromuscular diseases, contaminating the food supply with Clostridium spores can be a public health disaster of monumental proportions. Paralysis and death come fast and furious when the muscles that control breathing shut down.
Symptoms of botulism occur within hours or days after eating contaminated food.
* Double or blurred vision
* Drooping eyelids
* Slurred speech
* Difficulty swallowing
* Dry mouth
* Muscle weakness (migrating from face to legs)
* Difficulty breathing
Bioterrorism Preparedness
Federal, state, and local authorities are charged with monitoring bioterrorism threats and notifying the public once an attack has been established. If all the systems are working properly, authorities will notify the medical community, and make a public statement to let you know if your geographic area is in danger and where you should go to if you should become sick.
Here are some proactive steps you can take.
* Stay connected to your state’s department of health to follow disease trends occurring in your community
* Follow disaster preparedness advice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Homeland Security
* Sign up for e-mail, Twitter or Facebook alerts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
* Register for Reverse 911© a telephonic community notification system (if available) through your local community or county
* Tune in to local TV and radio programming for health officials’ announcements and heed to warnings
* Learn how to recognize and handle a suspicious package
* Create a family disaster plan and prepare an emergency disaster supplies kit for your entire family that includes a 3-day supply of water (1 gallon of water per day per person), nonperishable foods and medicines
* Practice good hygiene to avoid spreading germs and cover your mouth and noses with fabric if exposed

The show was actually better than the article on his site. He showed how just a palm full of anthrax blown into the air would kill the whole audience. Then a bag the size of flour dumped from a plane over a city would kill 400,000.
The botulism being added to processed food was really frightening. One wonders how easy any of this would be to accomplish?

Travelers from 14 countries that have been home to terrorists will no longer automatically face extra screening before they fly to the U.S.
Beginning this month, anyone traveling to the U.S. will instead be screened based on specific information about potential terrorist threats, a senior Obama administration official said. A person would be stopped if he or she matches a description, even if officials do not have a suspect’s name, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security issues.
For example, if the U.S. has intelligence about a Nigerian man between the ages of 22 and 32 whom officials believe is a threat or a known terrorist, under the new policy all Nigerian men within that age range will receive extra screening before they are allowed to fly to the U.S. If intelligence later shows that the suspect is not a terrorist, travelers will not be screened against that description.
The new procedures replace those that went into effect after the attempted bombing of a jetliner en route to Detroit on Christmas Day.
Those rules required extra screening, such as full-body pat-downs, for everyone from, or traveling through, any of these 14 countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The superseding indictment adds Ramirez as a defendant to what was previously an indictment charging only LaRose.
The new charges were announced by David Kris, Assistant Attorney General for National Security; Michael L. Levy, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; and Janice K. Fedarcyk, Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI in Philadelphia.
The superseding indictment charges that LaRose and Ramirez traveled to and around Europe to participate in and in support of violent jihad. According to the superseding indictment, Ramirez exchanged e-mail messages with LaRose during the summer of 2009, in which LaRose invited Ramirez to join her in Europe to attend a “training camp.” Ramirez is charged with accepting the invitation and asking to bring along her minor male child. On Sept, 12, 2009, Ramirez traveled to Europe with her child with the intent to live and train with jihadists. The day she arrived in Europe, the indictment alleges, Ramirez married an unindicted co-conspirator whom she had never before met in person.
The superseding indictment charges Ramirez, age 31, with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The charges against LaRose remain unchanged, and carry a maximum potential sentence of life in prison and a $1 million fine.
Ramirez was arrested this afternoon in Philadelphia after voluntarily flying to the United States from abroad.
This case was investigated by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in Philadelphia, the FBI Field Division in New York, and the FBI Field Division in Denver. It is being prosecuted by Jennifer Arbittier Williams, Assistant U.S. Attorney from the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and Matthew F. Blue, Trial Attorney from the Counterterrorism Section in the Justice Department’s National Security Division.
The public is reminded that an indictment is an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The Chinese man suspected of poisoning gyoza [a Chinese dumpling] that
sickened 10 people in Japan has said he injected pesticide into gyoza
on 3 separate occasions from October through December 2007, China’s
Public Security Ministry said Sunday [28 Mar 2010].
According to Du Hangwei, the head of the ministry’s criminal
investigation bureau, Lu Yueting told investigators he became
disgruntled because the Tianyang Food Company in Shijiazhuang, Hebei
Province, treated him differently from its permanent employees. Lu was
a temporary employee at Tianyang Food, which manufactured the gyoza.
Lu also was quoted as saying that he decided to seek revenge partly
because the company did not give his wife a bonus when she took
maternity leave.
At a briefing for certain members of the Japanese media, including The
Yomiuri Shimbun, Du emphasized that Lu acted alone, denying the
possibility he had an accomplice.
It was the 1st time since the official Xinhua News Agency reported
Lu’s arrest on Friday [26 mar 2010] that a senior official at the
ministry had given detailed information about the investigation
directly to members of the Japanese media. Du also said China had
already invited senior police officials from Japan, emphasizing
China’s intention to closely cooperate with Japan in the investigation.
According to Du, Lu stole methamidophos, a phosphorus pesticide, from
the cleaning department at the Tianyang Food plant and obtained
several syringes that had been thrown away by a medical institution in
July and August 2007.
Lu allegedly snuck into a refrigerated room where the gyoza were kept,
and injected methamidophos into the gyoza with a syringe on 1 Oct
[2007], about 4 months before the food poisoning cases caused by the
gyoza in Chiba and Hyogo prefectures came to light in January 2008. Lu
also is believed to have laced gyoza with the pesticide in late
October and late December 2007 using the same method, and then dumped
the syringes in a sewer.
Du said the Chinese police believed the gyoza allegedly poisoned by Lu
in late December 2007 caused the poisoning cases in Chengde, Hebei
Province, in June 2008.
Lu is said to have been a custodian at a cafeteria since 1993. Du
emphasized that the Chinese police had seen Lu as an important
potential suspect from the beginning, but said it took more than 2
years to arrest him because the police had to investigate 586 people
who had access to the refrigerated room.
Du said police learned that Lu had confessed his actions to his wife
and relatives after the poisoning cases came to light. According to
Du, the police took Lu into custody 16 Mar 2010 and he admitted
putting methamidophos in the gyoza.
On 21 Mar 2010, syringes were found dumped in a sewer where Lu said he
discarded them, Du said.
According to Du, Lu told investigators he did not expect his actions
to result in the sickening of Japanese consumers and he regretted what
he had done.
The poisonings began making headlines in Japan in late January 2008
after 3 members of a family in Hyogo Prefecture became ill on 5 Jan
[2008] after eating frozen gyoza made by Tianyang Food. The product
was manufactured on 1 Oct 2007, packed into bags, and stored in boxes
at the factory for about a month. The frozen gyoza was shipped on 2
Nov 2007, and arrived at Osaka Port 4 days later.
The gyoza that sickened 7 people from 2 families in Chiba Prefecture
was manufactured at the factory on 20 Oct 2007.

[Methamidophos has a number of other names including Monitor, Nitofol,
Tamaron, Swipe, Nuratron, Vetaron, Filitox, Patrole, Tamanox, SRA
5172, and Tam (1, 2). Methamidophos is also a breakdown product of the
organophosphate insecticide acephate (Orthene) (3, 4).
Tolerances for residues of methamidophos on raw agricultural products
range from 0.5 ppm in or on melons to 1.0 ppm in or on broccoli and
tomatoes.
Methamidophos is a highly active, systemic, residual organophosphate
insecticide/acaricide/avicide with contact and stomach action. Its
mode of action in insects and mammals is by decreasing the activity of
an enzyme important for nervous system function called
acetylcholinesterase. This enzyme is essential in the normal
transmission of nerve impulses. Methamidophos is a potent
acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (5).
It is effective against chewing and sucking insects and is used to
control aphids, flea beetles, worms, whiteflies, thrips, cabbage
loopers, Colorado potato beetles, potato tubeworms, armyworms, mites,
leafhoppers, and many others. Crop uses include broccoli, Brussels
sprouts, cauliflower, grapes, celery, sugar beets, cotton, tobacco,
and potatoes. It is used outside the USA for many vegetables, hops,
corn, peaches, and other crops (6). Commercially available
formulations include soluble concentrate, emulsifiable concentrate,
wettable powder, granules, ultra-low volume spray, and water miscible
spray concentrate (4).
Generally, methamidophos is not considered phytotoxic if used as
directed, but defoliation has occurred when applied as foliar spray to
deciduous fruit. It is compatible with many other pesticides, but not
for use with alkaline materials (4). Methamidophos is slightly
corrosive to mild steel and copper alloys. This compound is highly
toxic to mammals, birds and bees.
Do not graze treated areas, and be sure to wear protective clothing
including respirator, chemical goggles, rubber gloves, and impervious
protective clothing (1, 2).
Early symptoms of acute organophosphate poisoning are dependent on
route of exposure, and usually develop during or shortly after
exposure (within 12 hours) (9). If inhaled, tightness in the chest,
wheezing, headache, blurred vision, pinpoint pupils, tearing and runny
nose are common early symptoms. If ingested, nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, and cramps are the most common early signs of poisoning.
Sweating and twitching in the area of absorption are seen with skin
exposure. Weakness, shakiness, blurred vision, tightness in the chest,
sweating, confusion, changes in heart rate, convulsions, coma, and
cessation of breathing may occur with significant inhalation,
ingestion or dermal exposure (9). An intermediate syndrome has been
described in cases of poisonings in Sri Lanka, where patients
experienced paralysis of limb, neck, and respiratory muscles 24-96
hours after exposure. Delayed neurological problems (delayed
peripheral neuropathy) have been described 2-4 weeks after large
exposures to organophosphates, and include a loss of feeling and pins
and needles type of pains in the feet, legs, and hands (10, 11).
Atropine is an antidote for organophosphate poisoning (9).
People with high blood pressure, gastrointestinal disorders, heart,
liver, lung, or nervous system problems may be more sensitive to
methamidophos. Reduced sperm count and sperm viability were seen in
men who were exposed to the product Tamaron in China. It may be weakly
mutagenic (12), but there is no evidence of carcinogenicity in tests
with rats and mice.
The primary target of organophosphate compounds is the nervous system.
Methamidophos is rapidly absorbed through the stomach, lungs, and
skin. It is eliminated primarily in the urine.
