A Georgia sheepdog is recovering from injuries after squaring off against a pack of coyotes, killing eight of them, while protecting his herd.
Casper, a sheepdog who works on John Wierwiller’s Georgia farm, fought off more than half a dozen coyotes in a fight that lasted over half an hour, WAGA-TV reported.
Wierwiller says that Casper disappeared for two days after the brutal fight. “We knew he was hurt because we found parts of his tail and blood and other things, so we were worried,” Wierwiller said.

I worry about this heroic dog getting rabies.
Good doggie. But the best defense for flock/herd protection are DONKEYS. I see one or two out with a local meat producer cattle farmers herd near my house every day. Yotes never bother them cause those Donkeys HATE coyotes and their kicks will kill a coyote real quick.
But do the donkeys care about watching the sheep?

Yes, they do. They are great alert, guard animals and will range with sheep and goats and they have a life span of about thirty years.
I hope they get one to take some of the work off Casper.
The dogs owner didn’t have a gun so he could back up his dog?
I wonder. It sounds like the fighting moved to the creek, he may not have been able to keep up.
My family had a donkey years ago for protection of our goats. Dad shot him dead after catching him actually attacking them. i guess there’s a bad one every now and then.
We have two guard dogs now. Recently, a man in the area retired and with our permission, he walks our ranches at night, hunting coyotes and pigs. On about 5,000 acres, he has killed almost 50 coyotes in the past 5 months and 90 pigs. Our guard dogs are accustomed to his presence now and don’t bark when he’s there now. He likes to hunt and we buy his shells. it’s a win/win relationship.
If it was my dog there would have been some coyotes with fatal cases of lead poisoning

I’d rather herd cats than goats. At least cats won’t destroy fences and the neighbor’s trees.
Not sure what you are smoking Gaffer. Donkeys over shepherd worker dogs? Really?? Seems you have never owned a shepherd dog. Or at least sagacious one. If jackasses satisfy one’s need for a shepherd, well...I don’t know. cheers
Okay - that is hilarious. But sorry, my shepherd is pacing around the flock, nudging when one gets out of line.
Laying down at the only entry to an area. Maybe the jackasses written about have the same amount of synapses firing. Laughin out loud.
Glad you’re happy with your dog that nips at the heels (hooves) of the sheep to keep them in line - it’s why they call some of them Blue Heelers. But there’s enough information out there to show that a Jenny Donkey works fine, too.
I am not fighting gaffer - truly. I just have a hard time in my mind trying to substitute a donkey for a shepherd in tending ones flock.
Maybe I will see a donkey herding a flock - I just haven’t. but yeah - they have a hard kick.
Seriously - my tone is friendly
Kind regards
The donkey is a great guard animal, not a shepherd. There is a difference between a herding dog and a guard dog. All three are useful in their own way.
