Great Pyrenees.
Got one beside me.
Best dog EVERx

With the blue eye, the one in the report is probably a mix with husky. Oddly enough, the NC breeder had this exact mix due to a male husky sneaking onto the farm. I wonder if this was one of the pups. I’ll ask them...

I stopped at a farmer’s house to buy some eggs and saw he had a 3-legged pig. I asked him about it.
“It is an interesting story,” he said. “When it was young and living in the barn, we heard it squealing one night and found the barn on fire. He saved the barn, my livestock, my equipment and all the winter hay.
Then, we heard it squealing one day and found my son had fallen in the pond and would have drowned had the pig not alerted us. So we moved him into the house, as a pet.
Again, at night. We heard him squealing and found a maniac with a butcher knife in the kitchen. He would have killed us all in our sleep.”
I asked why the pig only had 3 legs.
He said, “Hey, a pig that valuable, you don’t want to eat all at once!”

Donkeys also have a mean bite that they'll use in defending against predators. It's not just the kick.

A small scale rancher near me has a donkey running with horses normally but occasionally puts him in with the cattle. If a person has a few acres of heavy brush, a donkey or two will do a nice job of clearing it out.

Predators in my area are primarily coyotes but also bobcat and black bear on rare occasions. When I moved in here, one of my new neighbors claimed there’s a wolf pack established about 5 miles from here. That’s 2 or 3 mountains distant.

Coyotes packing up seems to be a fairly new trait. I don’t remember this being part of their behavior in the past. Inbred with city dogs?

One of few I can remember.

You should have two dogs not one. Two Pyrenees or Anatolians are a force multiplier. Large packs of coyotes are common here. As soon as we get our compound fenced we’re getting two Anatolians.

“Only on FR will I read an article about a guard dog, and the Thread turns into a great debate over donkeys. You learn something new every day.”

Let’s mix in some llamas or alpacas into the debate. I forget which ones are good at guarding sheep.

I don’t know why the shepherd wasn’t carrying.

"Clearly what we have here is a failure to communicate."

The proper tool needed here is a Minigun mounted on a Class III Donkey. With high quality Noise Canceling Ear protection and some Stylish Eyewear for Our CIIIDonkey.

And a Sidecar.

I was thinking of that joke, which I have heard in a much more drawn out form, with the line “that’s some pig” featured 3-6 times over the course of 2-4 minutes, with a fair bit of “is that when he lost his leg?”. Thanks for posting it.

That dog is a real bad ass.

When I was young, I went fishing and took my Black Lab with me.
It was getting towards evening and packing it up
when we came across a few yotes, who surrounded my Lab.
He slam dunked one of them while the others backed off.
Gave me just enough time to get us the hell out of there. Good boy!
