"Some of these birds did not live a happy life. They were kept to produce feathers and their feathers were plucked out as soon as they grew in."...
In total, at least six species of parrots originally recovered from five of the desert's archaeological sites were studied in the research, with the remains variously dating from between 1100 to 1450...
"The feathers of tropical birds were one of the most significant symbols of economic, social, and sacred status in the pre-Columbian Americas," the authors write in their study.
"In the Andes, finely produced clothing and textiles containing multicolored feathers of tropical parrots materialized power, prestige, and distinction and were particularly prized by political and religious elites."
Behind the folds of this marvelous drapery, the colorful birds likely lived a miserable existence in captivity, far from the Amazonian rainforests that were once their home.

Yet I thought native Indians cared about wildlife. You mean they were cruel to exotic birds???

Any society that normalizes cruelty to animals is capable of normalizing cruelty to humans.
Unless you missed the news flash, these people graduated to human sacrifice long before they got to the point of using bird feathers for rituals.

Hawaiians did the same thing and killed off several bird species for the feathers.

Woke history teaches us that the native peoples were all good, and the European colonists were all bad. They taught that before "woke" was a thing. Native people were "living in balance with the land", and only taking what they needed, peacefully coexisting. Of course that was never true. Just a lie that has been repeated so many times people believe it.

Every society has used animals for meat, fur, feathers and more. Every society has also waged war and been “cruel” to people.
To: Tacticalman
That’s different than normalized cruelty like, for instance, throwing a live dog into a kettle full of boiling oil as is common practice in Asian cultures. If you can do that to a dog, you can do that to a person. One could draw parallels to a lobster I suppose but I think crustaceans are different than dogs. If I saw someone doing that to a dog and there were no witnesses...yeah.

History is just one continuous dark period. Or numerous consecutive dark periods following one upon the prior.

Going back hundreds of years to find injustice done to birds? They could have looked to the USA in the late 1890s and early 1900s to see entire bird species almost wiped out by plumage hunters on Southern Atlantic coast and Florida.

Hi.
There is a place in St. Pete that has a gazillion Peacocks.
The birds were bred to produce feathers for pigment in paint. Now they screech and howl, especially while mating.
Most annoying. What’s worst the city won’t open a season on the birds.
There’s a lot of peacocks in this area, but check out Jungle Prada.
I wish we could eat them...along with the chickens roaming around in Ybor city.

They were kept to produce feathers and their feathers were plucked out as soon as they grew in." What? This has to be a mistake. Everyone knows that "indigenous peoples" were at one with nature and prior to the arrival of Europeans there was no suffering and the environments was pristine and untouched. I know this because I read National Geographic.
