Have humans made dogs STUPID? Pets are 'lazy thinkers' compared to wild wolves
The Daily Mail ^ | 16 September 2015 | RICHARD GRAY

They may be man's best friend, but dogs have little to thank humans for it seems.

Research suggests the domesticated pets can't solve problems as well as their wild cousins because living with us has made them 'incapable of thinking for themselves.'

In tests, experts presented a 'puzzle box' containing food to a group of dogs, and a group of wolves and while the wolves were capable of breaking inside, the dogs looked to humans for help.

Lab rats have smaller brains, too, than wild peers.
Domestication makes most animals stupid.

I had a wolf hybrid. She was by far the smartest canine I have ever had.

I read this article to my three dogs.

The Girl put down the crossword puzzle she was working on and said,

“How many words does a wolf understand? None. You say ‘Good evening’ to a wolf, and he stands there with a stupid look on his face wondering if he should scratch at one of the millions of fleas he has on his mangy hide.”

The Youngest Brother and the Little Dog were playing chess.

The Youngest Brother said,

“And never send them to a store. They can’t add up the change, and they try to go through the 12 item checkout with 42 items.”

The Little Dog said,

“Wolves are problem solvers? What problems are they solving out there in the woods? ‘Should I pee on this pine tree or the next one?’ There’s a problem solver for you.”

In some cases, absolutely! Does Paris Hilton or Kim Assistans little purse dogs serve a purposes?

Working dogs on the other hand can be extremely smart. How they measure up against their lupine brethren , I don’t honestly know.

But considering the lupine branch of the klan are out their in the real world, on their own, they probably have the edge.

Actually, I'd say being able to lay on the sofa in comfort all day and getting feed with no work isn't exactly stupid. And many humans seem to be following suit.

It seems to me equally likely that the slower thinking wolves decided to take welfare handouts from humans rather than compete with the smarter wolves.

Chicken, Egg? Which came first?

Getting fed, not feed. It’s late. I’m getting stupider. :-)

working dogs hunters etc. still have those smarts the house dogs probably fit this description. the article doesn’t differentiate from the various breeds so is a pile of crap. Brittany spaniels climb fences, etc. jack russel terriers still create terror.

Dogs are not lazy, nor are they stupid.
Why would you try to drive a nail with a rock if you have a perfectly good hammer. My dogs said to me (specifically today). Hey; hammer, get over here and open the damn door, it's cold and wet out here and we want to lay down by the nice warm fire you built just for us.
(Once inside the house) Hey; hammer get us some treats, we need a snack, we would get for ourselves but you got the opposable thumbs.
Pretty damn smart if you ask me.

Is technology making people stupid? Some math professor complained that when he asks his class what the logarithm of 100 is everyone whips out their calculators.

Yes. There are also many contributing variables in environment. The racist question seems, untestable.

Well, not just that, but the domestication process itself would weed out the very smartest of animals, because you don’t keep breeding the ones that are constantly trying to escape, disobey you, assert dominance over humans, etc. You want to keep breeding the more “beta” animals instead, because they will naturally look to the humans for leadership.

Yes, with dogs that was an adaptation to living with humans. The wild canines that studied our faces to “read” our emotions would respond to us better, so we bred them until all dogs had that trait, because it was very advantageous. Wild canines have a completely different set of “signals” and looking each other in the face is a signal all its own!
