An archaeologist says it remains a mystery how a circle of stones initially arrived at the floor of Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay.
Underwater archeologist Mark Holley said while he first discovered the underwater stones in 2007, no one has been able to prove whether the rocks were placed there by nature or by mankind, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday.
"The first thing I said when I came out of the water was, 'Oh no, I wish we wouldn't have found this,'" Holley said of his discovery. "This is going to invite so much controversy that this is where we're going to be for the next 20 years."
In fact, several state officials and members of native tribes have expressed interest in the stone formation since it was discovered.
Holley is hoping to put the growing mystery to rest this summer when he and a Northwestern Michigan College student perform laser scans of the underwater image.
The Tribune said the scans will allow the researchers to make a computer model of the site, which is currently protected as a potential Native American site.

mastodon carving on Lake Michigan rock

Looks like a pretty random bunch of rocks to me. But even if not, it’s not a revelation that Lake Michigan was a lot lower a few thousand years ago. There’s a forest of tree stumps in 80 feet of water 15 miles out from Chicago that they’ve dated to 8300 years ago. Of course there’s gonna be Indian stuff out there.
Maybe it’s the spot where medical waste disposal comanies have been dropping all the cancerous testicles that doctors have been removing from pot smokers?
Bush’s fault.
yeah, from this image i get no impression of order.
what may be causing interest here might be that there is nothing even remotely similar anywhere nearby in the area they scanned. Clearly this is something that the image viewers found unusual.
can anyone offer a positive argument for the interest here?
We share the same assessment of this. Until I get more information this just seems like active imaginations more than anything else.
Most likely a lost load of quarry stone (or ballast) from a distressed or sinking ship.
Blam didn’t you post on this before?
As noted above, I didn’t vet this one sufficiently before posting it. :’)

Me too. I don't see anything even vaguely circular.
