Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

Potato Items Pulled From Store Shelves
February 24, 2009 - 7:18am
Discover What’s New at EmpowHer

Several potato products that may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes have been pulled from the shelves of Giant Food and Stop & Shop supermarkets, the Associated Press reported.

The products are 20 oz. bags of Simply Potatoes Shredded Hash Browns, Simply Potatoes Homestyle Slices and Simply Potatoes Red Potato Wedges. The products, which have “use by” dates ranging from March 29 to April 3, 2009, were recalled by Northern Star Co., a subsidiary of food processor Michael Foods Inc.

Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause flu-like symptoms and can be especially dangerous for pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

No reports of illness or injuries related to the recalled potato products have been received by Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop or by Landover, Md.-based Giant Food, the AP reported.

Customers who bought the products should throw out any unused portions and bring the receipts to their stores for a full refund, the companies said.

Sending a hug for the aching body.

Thanks ma'am. Sending a hug back to you.

Funny, sitting in this chair working on paying jobs is much harder on me than gardening. ~grin~ Probably because I'm squirming so much wanting to get back outside. And when I am outside, I relax.

>>>Put 1 cup dried pinto beans in pressure cooker with 2 tsp. olive oil, add water to fill pressure cooker half full,<<<

Hmmm 1 CUP beans + 2½ GALLONS Water...

Maybe if I had a 2 quart pressure cooker -

All those nutrients down the drain...

What about all that wonderful aroma therapy I’d miss.

Slow simmer, Mmmm sniff sniff - when will the corn bread be ready.... Drool drool Mmmmmm I can hardly wait... Sure smells good.... Aside from eating it, the aroma therapy and anticipation are my favorite parts of cooking...

If you are into quick, try cooking/canning beans then when you are hungry in a hurry, dump in a quart jar of beans and the other ingredients maybe ½ pint of ground venison and the spices - 15 minutes and meal is ready... Come on corn bread hurry up...

You can even can the entire recipe - but would suggest lowering the quantities of some of the spices - cilantro, sage, oregano all get stronger when canned. Remember when canning combination products, always pressure can for the longest processing ingredient - in this case the meat. In this case, it would be processed at 10# pressure for 90 minutes for quarts at sea level. (adjust for your altitude)

If you want to see some more on canned beans (plus a lot more neat suggestions on other subjects) check out:

>>>>Rodale also experimented with the different methods of metals and growing plants.<<<<

J.I. Rodale was really an exceptional experimenter - he reasoned out many many innovative organic gardening truisms we accept today.

Back in the 50’s my father took me to Emaus, Penna. and I got to spend two days with him going through his test plots and gardens.

It is certainly a shame that his work has been turned into a book factory - commercial operation that seeks publicity and spectacularism over the basics that J.I. tried to cultivate.

To those who might think that is ‘liberal’ thinking on my part, you are wrong. Every so often God has given us a few individuals who are teachers and experimenters who are not commercially motivated. That is good!

LOL I’ve been a spelling/grammar policeman in my time, not on FR though. There’s enough to argue about without adding spelling and grammar into the mix.

>>>LOL I’ve been a spelling/grammar policeman in my time<<<

Many years ago when I had to produce written proposals that had to have the approval of a couple of Military officers before we could implement them, I had a boss who operated on the theory that you take a ‘perfect’ proposal, then build in a couple of ‘mistakes’ - simple ones that even the least adept person would find immediately.

When the first one would ‘find’ that first error, we would agree to an immediate correction - he would then approve it for it was part ‘his proposal’ Then on to the second who would find the other ‘error’.

His success rate was well over 90% approvals when others were running about 30%.

Men, love them men, but LOL, I am just as bad.

I notice I'm getting more that way too. I'll leave the room to go check something on the computer that I forgot to do earlier. But I attribute that to my failing memory!

Well, another Øbama speech -

What does Wall Street (Investors) think of it?

DJIA 7,185.19 -165.75 Negative Change -2.25%

Every speech = another drop in the markets....

Since our Dear Leader does not like cold weather, couldn’t we send him for a LONG vacation to a nice remote Hawaiian Island. Maybe a speech break would let the markets recover a bit.

Homemade Cultured Vegetables: Making fermented or cultured veggies such as Sauerkraut or Kim Chi is a great way to preserve and enhance the nutritional value of winter veggies from your garden or market such as cabbage and root veggies.

Cultured vegetables are sooo good for you! Polish women have less cancer as a result of eating so much sauerkraut. Bubbies is a good brand if you don't want to make your own - raw cultures included! Mmmmmmm! Good source of vitamin C, too!

What gorgeous kitties! Is the gray one a Russian Blue? They are the most darling cats ever!

Here's how you make images fit the screen:

<img width="640" src="http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y258/FredNerks/kittens-1.jpg">

The width is the number of pixels across. Old computer screens were usually 640 x 480 so a 640 width will fit every computer screen on the planet. Maybe not Blackberry screens but they are on their own.

LOL I have 600 page technical manuals to publish soon, maybe I’ll do that. Make it small and obvious on one of the first few pages. If I can get the programmers to stop making changes to the live system without telling me!
