Go Light Your World

Read: Zechariah 4:1-6

"Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit," says the Lord of hosts. —Zechariah 4:6

Bible In One Year: 1 Kings 8-9; Luke 21:1-19

Do you feel as if you're burning out in your service for God? You may want to supply spiritual light to your dark world till the end of your life, but you wonder if you can. You won't burn out if you understand and apply the truth of Zechariah 4:1-6.

The prophet saw two olive trees that supplied oil to a bowl that fed seven lamps on a golden lampstand. As we think about the reality behind this symbolism, we can be encouraged. You and I are not the source of light that enlightens the world. We can only receive the oil of the Holy Spirit that fuels the living flame He produces. If we burn steadily through the long, dark hours, it is because we have learned to yield our lives to the Spirit's unlimited supply of power and strength. This comes only through continual fellowship with Jesus our Savior.

It needs to be said again and again: It's not what we do for the Lord, but what He does through us that enlightens and enriches others. We must be satisfied to be a bright and shining lamp, drawing from the hidden resources of the indwelling Spirit of Christ. Our role is to help others see the glory of His light. And we must remember daily that every demand placed upon us is a demand placed upon Him. —David Roper

Help me, dear Lord, to be honest and true
In all that I say and all that I do;
Give me the courage to do what is right,
To bring to the world a glimpse of Your light. —Fasick

Let your light shine—whether you're a candle in a corner or a lighthouse on a hill.

Railroad time: Grandfather's watch
knew it, kept it, noted it well.
Set as duty, it ticked away,
every movement, every click an echo
of steel wheel on steel rail.
Lives depended on the old Waltham,
Time to clear the mainline siding yet?
Not yet, not yet, tick, tick, tick.

Dang. I went for a cut yesterday. You have to start telling us in advance so we can plan these things better.

All Aboard

Who gave us the wheel, we do not know.
Lost in great antiquity, its value unsurpassed,
It is a lasting treasure from oh, so long ago,
Not something simply treasured from the past.

Its magic still is working, it still fulfills its role.
But it has gotten commonplace, and lost the sheen,
Of Godly intervention in the workings of the whole,
Until the stunning advent of the engineer’s machine.

We know who made the steam engine, and then,
We know who made it’s workings more efficient.
Apologies are offered to the clever gentlemen,
The names of whom were sacrificed improving our condition.

So many came to realize, it wasn’t just one dream,
That putting magic things together, multiplied their force.
The ease of getting rolling with the pushing of the steam,
Meant marriage had to be arranged, of wheel and iron horse.

So then the wheels were rolling and no one could make them stop,
And we couldn’t build them fast enough, or lay down all the track,
In time to keep the new machines and wagons of the crop,
From pushing hard to beat a time of lashings at our back.

A century and more they made news for every page.
In spite of all the energy and effort that it took,
This magic carpet made of steel, the darling of its age,
Couldn’t wait to get into the pages of the history book.

Shhhhhhhh!

The teacher of a first grade class collected well known proverbs. She gave each child in her class the first half of a proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb.

Here are the results:

Better to be safe than . . . . . punch a 5th grader.

Strike while the . . . . . . bug is close.

It's always darkest before . . . . . . daylight savings time.

Never underestimate the power of . . . . . . termites.

You can lead a horse to water but . . . . . . how?

Don't bite the hand that . . . . . . looks dirty.

No news is . . . . . . impossible.

A miss is as good as a . . . . . . Mr.

You can't teach an old dog new . . . . . . math.

If you lie down with dogs, you'll . . . . . . stink in the morning.

Love all, trust . . . . . . me.

The pen is mightier than the . . . . . . pig.

An idle mind is . . . . . . the best way to relax.

Where there's smoke there's . . . . . . pollution.

Happy the bride who . . . . . . gets all the presents.

A penny saved is . . . . . . not much.

Two's company, three's . . . . . . the Musketeers.

Don't put off till tomorrow what . . . . . . you put on to go to bed.

Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, cry and . . . . . . you have to
blow your nose.

None are so blind as . . . . . . Stevie Wonder.

Children should be seen and not . . . . . . spanked or grounded.

If at first you don't succeed . . . . . . get new batteries.

You get out of something what you . . . . . . see pictured on the box.

When the blind leadeth the blind . . . . . . get out of the way.

Better late than . . . . . . pregnant.

And, for Happy Hairstylist Day:

"Life is an endless struggle full of frustrations and challenges, but eventually you find a hairstylist you like."

(I think I'm glad you skipped Happy Zipper Day yesterday.)

Ode To That Which Went Away Without Turning Gray

Mother Nature and DNA just would not hesitate
To expose to all my aggressively balding pate.
The back of my head must "bare" the brunt
As the hair loss races rapidly toward the front.

This loss of head fur did not happen overnight,
There was no sudden early morning mirror fright.
A barber alerted me back two decades or so
"Your hair in the back is starting to let go."

I wasn't concerned, for what was the use?
I always knew it would either turn gray or loose.
I've always hoped my hair would go gray,
But instead it has chosen to just go away.

Losing one's hair brings on odd, nightmare fears,
Dreaming of a "comb-over" starting at the ears.
Or going to the barber and having to pay the full rate
For a haircut of hair from a partially covered pate.

Oh, the night sweats from dreams of "toups" and wigs
Made of woven grass, moss, leaves, bark and twigs,
Or the ones constructed of brown-dyed artificial turf
And those of the toy store varieties of "toupee de Nerf."

There are those who have suggested I just defer
To the idea that I get some man-made head fur.
I won't be pressured to get a fluffy wig, oh nyet.
My head would merely resemble an XXL Chia Pet.

And I will not wear a ball cap to hide my "spot"
They're always uncomfortable, always too hot.
And accept this as a bald-faced fact, not fable,
I won't ever wear a hat to the dining room table.

As a cop, for my bald spot I found a surprising use,
When directing traffic that's running wild and loose.
When it gets sunburned, it glows a red so bright,
Uncovered, I can use it to stop traffic day and night.

There are worse things than being thin of hair.
There is much more in life that just isn't fair.
So, to whom it may concern in the human race,
I do not view my bald spot as a matter of disgrace.

I've made New Year's resolutions I've kept each date.
I successfully resolved to lose hair and gain weight.
And why all the concern about baldness out of my sight?
If the glare bothers you, don't stand behind me, all right?
