Natural Health

Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

Basil, peppermint, helichrysum, lavender and Roman chamomile.

Yes, the Roman chamomile is expensive. I grow it and the helichrysum in a pot that I have to bring inside in the winter. Not as powerful at the oil but the dried flowers can be made into a sachet that you can use.

It can be eaten other ways; there was a German doctor whose name I cannot remember at the moment, who did much research into flax seeds and their uses, not only with cancer prevention and treatment, but other conditions. Even baked in muffins, they can help prevent breast cancer.

I tried taking them after my surgery last year but sadly my digestion cannot handle them. I bought 5 pounds, too!

I didn’t even harvest any lemon bomb this summer. I have at least 3 qts of tincture already! I do use it in small vases, though - smells so nice.

They can be ground fine, I have a small grinder and ground them. I have the fortune that things hardly anyone is sensitive to/allergic to, I am! Makes life interesting.

LJ, what do you think of ashwagandha? This article recommends it for reducing cortisol levels.

[I've appended some additional open-minded folks to my Essential Oils ping list. Let me know if you don't want to be on it.]

Here's an update on my experience with essential oils. I only learned about EOs about 6 months ago. I've been doing some experiments on myself and on willing relatives, and I've joined a community of oil aficionados started up by success guru Jack Canfield.

The toenail fungus experiment on MIL and BIL was a complete success. Over a period of a couple of weeks, I put one drop of Thieves blend on each of the four affected big toes. Discomfort was relieved, and fresh new nail growth began.

The skin tag experiment was a partial success, using a small phillips screwdriver as an applicator The four biggest skin tags turned black and dropped off. The four smaller ones seemed to maintain good circulation despite the oregano oil. If I had had only the small ones I wouldn't have bothered in the first place.

Another experiment had mixed results. I have some psoriasis amongst the hair on the back of my neck. I started with dandruff shampoo, with limited results. I then tried lavender oil (no success) and tea tree oil (no success). I tried mixing the oils with an unscented carrier, Vanicream. No luck. In fact it actually got worse, perhaps because Vanicream is petroleum-based (mineral oil).

Doctor-prescribed cortisone cream definitely had a positive effect, but I was warned that if I used it more than once or twice a week it would permanently thin my skin. I think the first couple of applications broke the scratch-itch cycle, and I've now switched to jojoba oil as a carrier, mixing it with lavender, frankincense, and helichrysum oils. This seems to work pretty well, and I'm down to a minuscule quantity of cortisone cream once a week. I'm hoping to get off the cortisone completely in the next couple of weeks.

My brother continues to be happy with the drug-free "morphine bomb" for his neck pain (five drops each of frankincense, copaiba, and Idaho grand fir oils in a capsule once a day). He bought some additional equipment to make it easier to fill capsules and he has bought refills on the oils.

Friends in the Canfield EO community are reporting all kinds of successes with EOs, both emotional and physical. For example, a woman with a 14-week-old baby diffuses a children's blend. She reports that her baby is very easy-going and sleeps for 11 and a half hours at night, and others -- including teachers -- are reporting better behavior from children with diffused oil in the air.

I'm still learning!

Over on the Q thread, AmericanInIsrael responded to a comment from lj about chemotherapy:
Sister is going through the entire protocol, just barbaric.

Make sure to increase your Omega 3 intake and only eat grass fed beef to lower your Omega 6. The 3/6 imbalance is strongly linked to such issues. Grain fed beef has 12 times more Omega 6 than normal.

Cancer issues are strange. I had a skin cancer on my face all Covid lockdown and could not get to a doctor to get it treated.

I lucked out and found a cheap cure that removed the Basil Cell Cancer tumor without surgery and biopsies etc. Which was nice as the tumor was growing quite nicely all summer.

It was a vitamin C powder poultice. 3 days on and 5 days off. Killed it dead, now months later no scar or sign of the cancer.

Anybody interested PM me.

I think the medical industrial complex is DS.

7 grand of surgery vs ten bucks worth if vitamins... right...

Pinging the list - most of these I posted before, but people have asked about herbs for mental acuity and memory, and so...pinging the list. Freepmail me to get on/off this list.

I recently started taking Saraswati Churna as my memory and mental acuity really dropped off after general anesthetic for cancer surgery last year, and then 4 weeks of Temoxifen turned me into a total idiot. Taking these herbs has really helped, and Saraswati Churna added some high octane! I can send links to where I get these herbs, just ask, or any other questions about how to use them.

Some Very Important Herbs for the Nervous System, Brain function, Mental acuity and memory

In Ayurveda herbs are generally used in formulation, not just as single herbs. I explained back up the thread why this is; in short: Herbs of similar action support the main herb or herbs, herbs with somewhat different action can help balance the formula so it is not extreme, some herbs help catalyze the action of the other herbs, and help digest and assimilate, and some carry the energy to specific organs or systems.

I have used or currently use all these herbs except Ginkgo, and have seen them work very well for numerous people. They have helped with memory and focus, anxiety and stress, depression, pain, nervous exhaustion, sleeping difficulties (some other herbs as well not listed), nervous tics and twitches and probably other conditions I can’t remember.

Some of the herbs below are used for more severe conditions such as Parkinsons and MS, and I have not tried to assist anyone with these conditions other than MS but she did not take her herbs regularly, and lived far away in a non-supportive atmosphere, sadly. The suggested doses are suggestions only, I might suggest more or less depending on the person, and also would be different if used in a blend.

Thank you so much. My mom is in fairly advance dementia, having a hard time figuring out the next few steps, but I find my own dern self having trouble remembering stuff these days.

You’ve done extensive research on this, I’d be interested in reading some of your sources.

Also, love your good night pics on the Thread 😎

I’ve posted some of my fave books here and there, tomorrow I will post titles and links to my main books, both herb, essential oil, and general health stuff. Mostly I know about Ayurveda but I’ve plenty of other mostly herbs books. I’ve whittled down my library and now have about mabye 40 books?

I’ve used herbs extensively on myself, family, friends, and friends of friends for about 30 years so I have some moderate experience with things that have worked. Really nice to give people info, and a lot of times herbs I’ve put together, and see them get all better! yay!

PS - It really unnerved me after the cancer surgery last year, how badly my mental faculties were affected. So I really upped my brain/mind herbs and it’s helped tremendously. Probably time helped the damage from the gen anesthetic. No more of that for me, ever!
