Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

Oh, nooooooo! The Facebook page that I quoted has the protocol WRONG. I focused too much on her interesting explanation, and not enough on the details of her protocol. Here's a "correct" version:

In total for the six weeks you'll need two 15-ml bottles of Citrus Fresh, one 5-ml bottle of Ledum, and one 15-ml bottle of Grapefruit oil.

For each week, add 10 drops of Ledum to an empty 5-ml bottle with the drop orifice removed, and fill to the top with Citrus Fresh from one of the 15-ml bottles. Replace the drop orifice, or put on a roller attachment

Each night before bedtime, apply 12-15 drops of this mixture to your fatty areas, spread it around evenly, and rub it in thoroughly.

After this, fill a capsule with 20 drops of Grapefruit oil, and swallow it.

The Ledum + Citrus Fresh digests the petrochemicals and breaks up the fat. The Grapefruit helps remove the bad stuff from the body. The Citrus Fresh can leave you highly photosensitive (susceptible to sunburn) for up to 12 hours, so only do this at bedtime.

Ok, so I’m officially nuts about essential oils. Today I started another experiment. For years I’ve had a 3 or 4 skin tags in each armpit. They’re not worth a doctor’s appointment, but I’d like to get rid of them anyway.

The most extreme EO solution is oregano oil. Oregano oil is considered to be a “hot” oil, because it produces a powerful burning sensation when applied to skin. You never want to put a drop of oregano oil in your mouth, or accidentally touch your eyes after using oregano oil.

Some people advise mixing oregano oil with a carrier oil before applying to skin tags, but wild folks just apply it “neat”. I’m a wild one. I put some oregano oil into a 1-ml bottle, and then used a toothpick to gather a little for application. I then carefully wiped the toothpick along each skin tag, trying to avoid the adjacent skin. Doing this in front of a mirror, this was modestly successful with my right (dominant) hand on my left armpit, and slightly less successful with my left hand on my right armpit. I didn’t know whether skin tags are actually populated with nerves, so I knew I was taking a little risk.

The skin tags quickly turned bright pink to reddish, and a red zone formed around each skin tag, not quite a quarter inch in radius. There was a significant burning sensation, but not unbearable. Eight hours later the skin tags are still luminous, but the skin around them has calmed down.

I’ll continue this daily for a week, and let you know the result at the end.

Lavender oil mixed with coconut oil, or aloe vera gel, for sunburn.

I learned recently that lavender is effective in preventing and/or healing the sunburn-like effects from radiotherapy for cancer. I wish I knew about this when my brother was having his neck cancer treated. The treatment (nearly 10 years ago) was successful, but the skin on his neck was burnt to a crisp.

This post is both about essential oils and about Jack Canfield, lead author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and of The Success Principles, which I highly recommend. According to Guiness, Chicken Soup is second only to the Bible in books sold. To me, Canfield is the Mr. Rogers for adults.

Canfield is giving another invitation (by Zoom) to his October Abundance Experience, with many amazing speakers explaining how you can bring abundance into your life, whether you're looking for an abundance of money, love, health, energy, time, service, or all of the above. Essential oils are part of the solution.

Sorry for the short notice, but the Zoom call is at 10 am Pacific this morning. I'll let you know if the recording is made available. This stuff is a little woo-woo for most on FR, but perhaps there may be some on this thread who will find it interesting.

Enough about oils. for now. I'll leave my petrochemical detox and skin tag removal experiments percolating, and introduce a couple of other topics. But, by the way, the morphine bomb continues to work for my MIL post-pacemaker surgery. I've also given her some frankincense to help with the extra pin pricks in her fingers from diabetic blood testing pre-surgery. She says it has helped.

The first new topic I'd like to introduce is trigger point therapy. My mom, now 86 and moving along the dementia path, learned about trigger point therapy nearly 40 years ago to help my dad with chronic pain problems. She started with Bonnie Prudden Myotherapy, and then graduated to Clair Davies's Trigger Point Therapy Workbook.

The first thing you need to know about trigger points is that most chronic pain is muscular. People talk about arthritis and pain from joints, but even there, I suspect the origin is largely muscular. In many cases muscle pain causes inflammation which then inflames the joints, producing joint pain and bone damage.

The primary cause of chronic muscle pain is trigger points, which are microspasms within the muscle. Either injury or overuse can cause these microspasms. The problem is that trigger points can be extremely persistent, lasting practically forever without intervention. They can pull on adjacent muscle fibers, causing additional trigger points and extending the degree and scope of the pain.

The basic way way to relieve a trigger point microspasm is to deprive the affected muscle fibre of oxygen until it relaxes. There are two major approaches: local pressure and "needling". Needling is not something you can do at home, but the pressure approach is easily administered by yourself or by someone close to you The basic idea is to press on the trigger point for about 10 or 15 seconds. While this can miraculously dissolve a single trigger point, trigger points usually come in clusters, so you often have to work on many separate trigger points. The other trick is that the pain and the trigger point may not be co-located, so it's not always productive to exert pressure right where the pain is. The pain remote from the trigger point is called "referred pain". The Davies book has maps to show you where the originating trigger point might be for a given pain location.

My simplest trigger point story has to do with lower back pain. Nearly 40 years ago I was plagued with sometimes debilitating lower back spasms. It turned out that the relevant trigger points were not in the lower back but in my buttocks. I used the rounded corner of a dresser to relieve those trigger points, and I've only had a back spasm once in the last 40 years.

A more complicated story concerns a frozen shoulder, which developed soon after an injury caused by slipping down a river bank. I first went the usual medical route. The doctor I consulted recommend physiotherapy. The PT was competent enough and nice enough, but the experience was pure torture, with no positive effect. PTs put their full faith in stretching, but stretching doesn't release a trigger point; it just aggravates it. The doctor's next recommendation was surgery. I said no thanks, and decided to focus on trigger points. I reasoned that the initial injury had produced a trigger point which had then pulled on a number of other muscles, eventually forming a huge network of trigger points that caused my shoulder to seize up. Mainly using a tennis ball against a wall, I worked through the many trigger points one by one until the shoulder was complete;y free -- and pain-free -- again. Since that time Davies has come out with a specialized Frozen Shoulder Trigger Point Workbook, but I haven't had a need for it yet.

It took decades, but now many massage therapists seem to have an awareness of trigger point therapy. Perhaps even physical therapists do. The inventor of the trigger point concept was Janet Travell, who was JFK's personal physician because of her magic with back pain.

If you want to learn more, I particularly recommend Davies's The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook: Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief. It's around $20 for the paperback and less for the Kindle version.

I’m currently experimenting with Tea Tree oil for thick horrid toenails, probably fungus but doesn’t have all the hallmarks. I applyy with a Q tip twice a day after showering. Hard to tell if it is helping as you can’t see until the new nail starts to show in the nail bed. I think I see a tiny bit of normal looking new nail but I will report back.

I hope to get back to this thread soon as it is so interesting!

Copying these EO remedies for migraines; a friend is suffering right now.

I used to use a hot foot bath, covering the ankles, as hot as can be borne and is still comfortable, for about 20 minutes. It reduced the migraines about 85% every time. The hot water opens blood vessels in the legs and reduces pressure in the head area. I wish I’d know about these other methods.

I haven’t pinged the list in a LONG TIME. Freepmail me to get on/off this ping list.

Some anti-cancer herbs etc, I took them all, and still take most of them. Links to a few on amazon. Some Turkey tail prodecuts are better than others, I would NEVER buy any ingredients from China. And links to suppliers of Arjuna.

Vitamin D3 – helpful for immune system, even if not low in Vit D, which people who do not go in the sun much often are low

Turkey Tails Coriolus Versicolor - Stimulates immune system in general, often used for cancer – dose as on bottle or whatever one can take

Turmeric - powerful anti-inflammatory, many uses, also anti-cancer – at least 1 teaspoon or more daily

Green tea- esp Matcha powder – anti-cancer properties – 1 teaspoon or more daily

Graviola – soursop leaf extract – helps growth of new healthy tissue, used for cancer, acid reflux and other conditions

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011M542LE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Especially for breast cancer, the first two do more or less what Tamoxifen does

Flax seeds (at least 3 T) especially used ground eaten in cottage cheese, or however one can get them down
Shatavari - 1 to 2 teaspoons daily
Vitex/Chaste Tree Berry - helps protect and reduce lumps in breast, also generally anti-cancer

Lymphatic problems including cancer:
Red Root extract –as directed for three weeks, then a week off, repeat, not for long term use but every few months

https://www.amazon.com/Herb-Pharm-Extract-Cleansing-Detoxifying/dp/B0012QD2KQ

Prunella Extract – used for immune system, cancer, flu and other conditions. If anyone wants to make it, it’s easy to grow, I make my own extract.

And some wanted source for Arjuna, here are two good ones, I’ve used both companies for over 20 years, good quality.

And one more, I used to use them a lot but I lost my wholesale license with them ($500 a year to maintain!) and so got mad at them. Good quality herbs.

I’m sure there are more. In fact some are seeping into my memory as we speak. Melatonin, for instance. My naturopath doc recommended it to help with the cancer. I tried it 3 times and each time felt incredibly drugged, dizzy, and really awful, each time for almost 24 hours. So I can’t take it, but most people do not have this side effect. DH takes it for acid reflux, as it is helpful for that as well, and he has no side effects!

I can highly recommend the Young Living M-grain oil for migraines. My husband suffers from migraines and one day half frantic because nothing seemed to be helping I held a bottle under his nose.

His response was "Ewwww get that stuff away from me!"

I shrugged and left, it had been worth a shot. I hadn't even gotten out the door before he said, "hey, bring that back!"

He took a couple more deep sniffs and said he could feel the pain and pressure retreating.

He never regarded my little hobby seriously until then.

For stress headaches, lavender, roman chamomile, valerian and tangerine in a warm bath followed by lying down with a cold pack at the base of my head and one over my eyes.

If you chill easily then add a warm pack at the small of your back.

I make the cold packs out of uncooked rice in a cloth bag. I store them in the freezer in a zip top bag to keep them from picking up odors.

I’m currently experimenting with Tea Tree oil for thick horrid toenails, probably fungus but doesn’t have all the hallmarks.

Thanks, LJ, for your contribution. I'm glad to see you here again. I hope everything's OK back at the ranch.

My MIL and disabled BIL live with us in a guest house. The BIL had terrible toenail fungus for years before he joined us. A couple of weeks ago I took him to a podiatrist, who didn't have any good suggestions, just gave him a pedicure. The conventional medical treatments for toenail fungus are dicey and terrible for the liver.

About 10 days ago I started him on Thieves oil blend (clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary). Within days it was clear the oil was doing something and by now BIL says that the oil treatment has made a tremendous difference. (I didn't know that he was actually suffering discomfort from the toenail fungus.) People at oil-testimonials.com say that the entire toenail may drop off before growing a new one clean of fungus.

Seeing the progress with my BIL, my MIL confided that she too had toenail fungus (and blamed it on sharing clippers with the BIL). I applied the same treatment -- basically a drop for each big toenail -- and within a day it was clear something was going on.

The complete treatment is supposed to take a month, so I'll report back. Meanwhile, my armpit skin tag experiment, with oregano oil neat, is having positive but not perfect results. The biggest skin tag has turned black (grossing out my wife) and is about to drop off. Several of the others are progressing in the same direction, but haven't turned black yet. A couple of the smallest ones seem unaffected by the oil. I guess they don't have enough surface area vs. blood circulation to be sufficiently affected by the oil.

The experiment started slowly. Originally I was using a toothpick to apply the oil, but the toothpick didn't seem to carry enough oil. I switched to a small phillips screwdriver, which holds oil within grooves at the tip. With this I was able to get enough oil on the skin tags to matter.

Thanks for update. I have some weird skin things that I can’t remember the name of; I’d like to experiment with them. Soon I’ll find the name, look up possible EO treatment, and report. Others may have them. I just copied the EOs you are using on your MIL and BIL’s toenails in case the tea tree doesn’t pan out. :-)

I read that the new nail will grow in nice and healthy and the old icky nail gradually grows out and can get cut off. Interesting about it dropping off. Progress will be slow as big toenails don’t grow very fast.

Do you know off hand the ingredients for the M-grain EOs? I like to collect EO treatments for conditions and keep the list on hand for people or myself.

Sadly I dont have any chamomile EO, too pricey for me.
