I hate to tell you this, but the number is 65,000. We think this thread can match the LOTR threads.

The closest I got was one a half-mile touching down when I was 16. Headed to the storm drain in the field next to the park and waited it out.

My brother in had a close shave. Trailer next to his was destroyed. He, of course, continues his charmed existence.

I saw a typhoon in Japan rip the top off an aircraft hanger not more than a 100 yards from my barracks. Wind was so strong it was forcing water around the sealing material around the window. I had to put towels in the window sill to keep my rack from getting wet.

When I was a kid, we had a tornado march down the street my house was on. Missed every house for a five block stretch. Took out every power line, and anything else connected to the timber poles on either side of the street. One of the poles supposedly ended up almost two miles away where it plowed through the roof of a Denny's. Didn't hurt so much as a shingle on my parents house.
