  • UCLA researchers using COVID-19 vaccine tech to treat peanut allergies

    04/10/2023 5:45:38 PM PDT · by algore · 14 replies
Taking inspiration from the groundbreaking vaccines used during the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers at UCLA are exploring a new method to treat peanut allergies. Scientists at the university have developed a “nanoparticle” that delivers mRNA to liver cells in an attempt to “teach” the immune system to tolerate the protein found in peanuts that is responsible for causing allergic reactions in 1 out of every 50 children. The technology has already been used in mice with success in reducing the seriousness of an allergic reaction, researchers said. The treatment also appeared to stop peanut allergies from developing. The mRNA treatment, while...

President Donald Trump will announce Wednesday that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and that the State Department will begin a process to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.Trump will first announce that the “United States government recognizes that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel,” according to one of three senior administration officials who spoke with reporters on Tuesday. The officials conveyed that the change is a recognition of “reality” — both the historic reality that Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people and the Jewish faith since ancient times; and the modern reality that the...

California's pension system is living in a fantasy world where investment returns average 12.5% annually and there's enough money for everyone.Unfortunately that's not going to happen. A big study from Stanford Professor Joe Nation along with California Common Sense analyzed the need for major cuts to CalPERS, CalSTRS and UCRP.The largest union, CalPERS, has a 82% chance of a budget shortfall in the next 16 years.More highlights via Eric Savitz at Forbes: The June funded ratio, which measures assets to liabilities. is only 74% for CalPERS even using a high-rate of return assumption for its investments. Assume a 6.2% return,...

Welcome to the United States of Grand Fenwick This Guide is carefully prepared for new arrivals who may find our ways a bit confusing. Above, please note our Grand Symbol of the USGF, which is fashioned after the real bird itself: the proud (and unfortunately common) two-headed eagle. In the wilds, this bird can often be found in the hedges, traving sideways, ever dodging from one side to the next. As our national symbol, this Grand Fenwick bird is always wise, for it is never proven wrong.. having either truth in one beak, or the other at all times....

Hemingway's Fishing Boat May Be Restored Ernest Hemingway's 40-foot, black-hulled fishing boat, the Pilar, could be getting a little restorative nip and tuck. Local watercraft preservation specialist Dana Hewson and members of the Boston-based Hemingway Preservation Foundation are heading to Finca Vigia, Hemingway's estate in Cuba, where he will photograph and examine the Pilar. "Professionally, this is a really fascinating project for me," Hewson told The Day of New London. He works at Mystic Seaport. Hemingway sailed the boat when he lived in Cuba from 1939 to 1960, and is said to have conceived some of his greatest works, including...

From the morality of goose-liver pâté to outsourcing state jobs to India, where does Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger stand? Californians should get a clearer picture starting this week, as state lawmakers send a crush of bills to the first-time officeholder for his approval or veto. Since his election last fall, Schwarzenegger has controlled most of the agenda in Sacramento rather than taking his lead from lawmakers. Positioning himself as a moderate Republican and a pragmatist, he has fashioned campaigns of popular appeal - to promote citizen participation, improve business conditions, streamline bureaucracy and encourage bipartisanship - that rarely pin him down...
