SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc last year secretly built a custom software program to search all of its customers' incoming emails for specific information provided by U.S. intelligence officials, according to people familiar with the matter. The company complied with a classified U.S. government directive, scanning hundreds of millions of Yahoo Mail accounts at the behest of the National Security Agency or FBI, said two former employees and a third person apprised of the events. Some surveillance experts said this represents the first case to surface of a U.S. Internet company agreeing to a spy agency's demand by searching...

From Linked Politico: President Barack Obama used a pseudonym in email communications with Hillary Clinton and others, according to FBI records made public Friday. The disclosure came as the FBI released its second batch of documents from its investigation into Clinton’s private email server during her tenure as secretary of state. The 189 pages the bureau released includes interviews with some of Clinton’s closest aides, such as Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills; senior State Department officials; and even Marcel Lazar, better known as the Romanian hacker “Guccifer.” In an April 5, 2016 interview with the FBI, Abedin was shown an...

Yahoo Mail users are furious after the company debuted a major resign of the popular email service that eliminated many features and, some claim, left it looking like a knock off of competitor Gmail. Observers say the 'beautiful' new look of Yahoo Mail is a product of new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer - and it has backfired. The mail service's 275million users were 'surprised' on October 8 with the redesign and tens of thousands have complained about glitches and reduced functionality. Many simply don't like the look and feel of the new product.

I've been a yahoo e-mail user for over 15yrs and Yahoo has come up with a new policy for users to be implemented sooner than later. I realize that all communications are now being scanned & archived by the fed gov't but I do feel Yahoo is going above & beyond and really pushing for advertising dollars. It burns me,too,& that's why I want out. I'm not partial to gmail or outlook. Does anyone have a suggestion for a free email service that is reputable and has a modicum of privacy? I would appreciate your comments and suggetions. Thanks!

The IDF has announced it will block soldiers from having access to social media on the Internet as well as email accounts while they are in offices on military bases across the country. Among those to be barred are the popular Facebook and Twitter social networking sites, as well as Google’s Gmail and the Yahoo! network’s Yahoo! Mail. It is possible that cellular service could be disrupted as well at least within offices, according to unconfirmed reports. Reportedly, soldiers might still be able to access the Internet on their private cell phones, and in their break rooms. Military intelligence officials...

Alleged Sarah Palin hacker, Kernell to wait another six months for trial by Robert McMillan, Security Blanket Tue, 2009-10-27 23:32 Topic(s): Data Protection It shouldn't come as a surprise, given all the motions flying before Judge C. Clifford Shirley, but alleged Sarah Palin hacker David Kernell's trial has been moved back six months. It was set to start today, but it turns out the judge moved it to April 20 2010 a few weeks back. Looks like there are about a dozen motions before the judge right now, including five motions to dismiss the indictment. Kernell was fingered as the...

The FBI on Wednesday announced that it had charged 53 defendants, the largest number ever charged in a cybercrime case, following a multinational investigation into a phishing scheme that operated in the United States and Egypt. Thirty-three of the 53 defendants named in the indictment have been arrested, the FBI said, and several others are being sought. The investigation, dubbed "Operation Phish Phry," began in 2007. Authorities in Egypt have charged 47 defendants linked to the phishing operation. Phishing is a form of social engineering that attempts to convince Internet users, via e-mail or other means, to provide online credentials...
