LAURINBURG — Edwards Wood Products plans to expand in Scotland County with a $30 million investment in a new saw mill, state Commerce Secretary Anthony M. Copeland announced on Wednesday. The manufacturer of wood pallets and high-grade lumber will invest the money over the next three years and create 46 new jobs. While 150 watts is generally associated with lightbulbs and other devices that are usually thought of as low-power and benign, at Olympus Laser Creations in Rochester, 150 watts is all it takes to craft wood into elaborate decorative boxes. The shop and products are the result of the minds of Lance Crummett and Steve Luce, two former Olympia tech industry workers who found themselves unemployed after they were laid off three years ago. “After a suitable time of enjoying our day off, we decided that we actually needed to make some money,” Crummett said. At the company they had worked...

For those of us with space to spare, our workbenches tend to sprawl. The others who are more space limited will certainly feel envy at [Love Hultén]’s beautiful Tempel workbench. The workbench appears at first to be a modern interpretation of a secretary’s desk. There are some subtle hints that it is no ordinary piece of furniture. The glowing model of our solar system on the front, for example.

I have a Grizzly 10 inch saw, which is not bad as saws go. My problem is the, swear word, tape measure locator on the cross fence support. There is no repeatability swear Word. If you change blades you must make a mental note of the difference in width between blade you replaced and the blade you are using. Now because I of an advanced age you have mind farts or lose where you wrote it down so I started to look around for an alternative. Back when I was young and CNC machining came out I was working for...

My daughter needs to cut a silhouette out of a 4x8 plywood sheet. In other words, she will draw the figure, then I need to cut the outside pieces of the sheet. Someone lent me an auto scrolling saw. I have no workbench or vise. Of course, I will wear my shooting/safety goggles and earplugs. What else do I need to cut the plywood safely? Can I just borrow or rent two sawhorses? If so, how do I clamp the sheet to the sawhorses? Thanks.

Hiya! A good buddy of mine (Army) just returned from a year in Iraq, and just before he returned he shipped me a beautiful US Flag that comes with a 8.5x11 inch certificate that certifies that the flag was flown over the US Embassy in Mosul, Iraq. I'm so proud that he thought of us. While he was gone, my wife, daughter and I did some painting for his wife, and assorted other handyman things. We also sent him a few care-packages. I feel like he's returned the favor a thousand fold! My question is this. I'd like to *hand...

A small woodworking tool manufacturer, Stots Corporation, includes a license agreement on its TemplateMaster jig tool. The tool is licensed, not sold, and customers cannot sell it or lend it to others. Nor can they sell or lend the jigs they make with it. We’re all familiar with license agreements on software tools that limit what you can with the product. But what about a license agreement on a real tool limiting what you can with the product and the things you make with it? “Shrinkwrap licenses are showing up everywhere,” a reader recently wrote. “I just bought a jig...

November 4, 2002 Different Face for Cover of Popular MechanicsBy DAVID CARR n the universe of male subjects for magazine covers, there are only a few sure things. Ben Affleck is a winner, and George Clooney is always a good bet to do well on the newsstand. But few can anchor a magazine like Jesus, a cover subject who brings them back year after year, particularly for news magazines like Time, Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report. Now the appeal of Jesus has found a surprisingly new home — the cover of Popular Mechanics. The December issue of...
