Woodworking plans for flag display case with 8.5x11 certificate

Hiya!

A good buddy of mine (Army) just returned from a year in Iraq, and just before he returned he shipped me a beautiful US Flag that comes with a 8.5x11 inch certificate that certifies that the flag was flown over the US Embassy in Mosul, Iraq. I'm so proud that he thought of us.  While he was gone, my wife, daughter and I did some painting for his wife, and assorted other handyman things.  We also sent him a few care-packages.  I feel like he's returned the favor a thousand fold!

My question is this. I'd like to *hand make* a display case to display the flag and certificate.  I'd actually like to make two or more of them, and offer the extras to him to use to display the flag he sent home to his wife (and any others he may have).  I'm a fairly clever woodworker, but it sure would help if I had existing plans.  Here's a link to something like what I have in mind.

They're going for $150 at this web page.  I'm sure I can make it just as nice, if I have a little luck and patience.

Does anyone know where I can get some diagrams/plans for making something like that?

Go to /www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php. Lots of woodworkers there and many have made flag cases. Friendly people, willing to help. I've seen several threads on flag cases there, along with plans and photos.

Two things.

When you get plans, please copy me so I can make one for my father-in-law's flag from his funeral.

I just bought a 75 watt laser engraving machine which will engrave nicely on wood, metal, or glass. If you need anything engraved, since you are a fellow freeper and this is support the troops, I'll do it for free.

I realize you say you want to hand make the flag display cases, but for the flags we got to ship to relatives we ordered the cherry and pine cases from United States Flag Store, which has some decent looking cases. Matching picture frames for the certificate are easy to find locally, as well. If nothing else, you might want to order one and see how it's made and fashion your own plan accordingly. The 3 x 5 flag fits perfectly. (Darling husband was in Afghanistan last year. His base flew several flags for him, which made fantastic gifts with the corresponding "flown in honor of" certificate.)

I have built two display cases for people from Meisels Hardware Specialties www.meiselwoodhobby.com
Item numbers:
W2040 http://www.meiselwoodhobby.com/cgi-bin/webplus.exe?script=/shop/item.wml&groupid=10&prodid=W2040&deptid=8&SessionID=200672219555684
W2426 http://www.meiselwoodhobby.com/cgi-bin/webplus.exe?script=/shop/item.wml&groupid=10&prodid=W2426&deptid=8&SessionID=200672219555684

W2426 is probably the one you want, the triangle version. The other is more for both the flag and to display awards etc.

Both plans are set up for the hobby worker. I like to modify mine a bit with better joinery. Worth the $12.00 though.

The certificate is very colorful, with the American flag in the upper left, the round State Department seal in the top center, and the Iraqi flag in the upper right, with all of them being equal in height and size.  Below that, and taking up much of the rest of the paper is a large waving American flag color watermark.

The large text over the watermark area says....

THE FLAG
OF THE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

This is to certify that the accompanying flag flew over the United States Embassy in Mosul, Iraq, on 7 April 2006. This flag was flown in recognition of the service Master Sergeant Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx has given for his country during Operation Iraqi Freedom, in Ninewa Province, Iraq. At his request this flag is presented to

Marinebrat, MrsMarineBrat & DaughterMarineBrat

...at the bottom left it's signed by the "Regional Security Officer", U.S. Embassy Office, Mosul, Iraq.

...at the bottom right it's signed by the "Regional Coordinator", U.S. Embassy Office, Mosul Iraq.

Hmmm. I had always thought it was in the Green Zone. Irregardless, it sounds really cool. Great tagline, too!

It sounds to me like there's more than one US Embassy. There must be regional offices in major Iraqi cities.
