State Sen. Tim Cullen, a moderate Democrat from Janesville, broke with his party's caucus Tuesday, saying he may become an independent over what he felt were political "insults" by the Senate majority leader. Cullen said he made his decision, announced to the rest of the caucus by email, after Sen. Mark Miller, D-Monona, slighted him with committee assignments. Every senator in the caucus was given at least two committee leadership positions. Cullen has none. Miller said in a statement Tuesday that Cullen turned down an "important" committee overseeing small business and tourism. The immediate result of the defection is not...

On Thursday, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist Eugene Kane provided a forum for Senator Lena Taylor to clear up allegations that Taylor’s property may have been a party to voter fraud during the April 5, spring election. Of course, Taylor has yet to clear up any of the questions surrounding the exorbitant number of voter registrations and a felon voter voting from her property. Senator Taylor even went so far as verbally accosting a TMJ4 reporter outside her home who was trying to seek answers to these questions. And while Eugene Kane attempts to discredit those “looking for voter fraud under...

"I'd almost be willing to get a job in order to participate in A NATIONAL GENERAL STRIKE." As was to be expected the folks at the Democratic Underground went Drama Queen berserk the moment they heard the news about the Wisconsin senate voting to restrict collective bargaining by public employee unions. One general theme of their anger was some sort of statewide or even national general strike by workers in order to protest the senate's action. And out of all the anger came perhaps the perfect comedy gem of a quote above produced by DUer ProudDad which perfectly expressed in...

With the first fine of $100 for missing a floor period kicking in today, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said he's nearing the end of tools he can use to cajole Dems back to the Capitol. "I've just about exhausted everything available to me to try and compel them to come back," Fitzgerald said after the Senate adjourned. The Senate will be back tomorrow for the final day of the scheduled floor period for March, meaning Dems face at least $200 in fines each if they aren't on the floor tomorrow as well. Fitzgerald said the body could come back...

Fitzgerald said Senate GOP remains unified Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said this afternoon Senate Republicans remain unified behind the guv's budget repair bill. Sen. Rob Cowles was quoted in this morning's Green Bay Press-Gazette that Republicans should be willing to meet Dems halfway on the impasse and stressed the economic concessions for public employees are the real key of the budget repair bill. Republicans then met in a more than two-hour caucus that pushed back the start of today's 11 a.m. floor session to after 1:30 p.m. But Fitzgerald said Republicans remain rock solid and there were no signs of...

Senate Org circulated a ballot today that would require the majority leader to review and certify the time sheets for those employed by a senator who's been absent without leave for at least two session days. The ballot, also deactivates copy machine access codes for any absent senator. Instead, those lawmakers' staffs would have to ask the sergeant at arms staff for help in making copies with the costs charge to the senator's office expense account. The ballot was due at 11 a.m. A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald did not immediately return a call seeking comment on...

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald today said he's not going to let Democrats debate the budget repair bill "ad nauseum" when they return from self-imposed exile. Senate Republicans engrossed the bill today, rendering it unamendable as Dems continue to boycott a vote. For now, Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, says his caucus' attention has turned to the state budget while exploring ways to persuade Dems to come home. After Sen. Dale Schultz declined to offer an amendment on the floor, Fitzgerald said he still has 18 solid Republican votes ready to support the repair bill. There are 19 in the GOP caucus. "We're...

The (Wisconsin) Senate voted 19-0 to repeal requirements that law enforcement collect data from traffic stops in an attempt to ascertain whether there is any racial profiling going on. The bill also repeals a requirement that law enforcement academies train recruits on avoiding racial profiling. Sen. Mary Lazich said the mandate, included in the 2009-11 state budget by Dems, said she heard from small and large communities about the difficulties imposed upon them through the legislation. "It's a huge, huge burden on our law enforcement community," she said.

Debate got quite heated this morning. Democratic state Sen. Russ Decker accused Senate Minority Leader Jon Erpenbach of blackmailing him into voting to sustain the veto. Decker said Erpenbach threatened to yank him from his position on the powerful Joint Finance Committee if he doesn't vote to sustain the veto. Erpenbach didn't reply. He ordered the meeting closed to the public immediately after Decker made his statement.
