The struggling retailer says it will stop selling Whirlpool's washing machines, refrigerators and other appliances. Sears will also stop offering Maytag, KitchenAid and Jenn-Air products, all of which are part of Whirlpool. Sears will sell its existing inventory of Whirlpool products but not order more. Whirlpool will keep making some products sold under Sears' Kenmore brand.

Electrolux AB has agreed to pay $3.3 billion to acquire General Electric Co.'s appliances business, a move that would put the Swedish group head-to-head with Whirlpool Corp. at the top of the U.S. market for white goods. The deal is the largest ever by Electrolux and comes amid consolidation among makers of stoves, dishwashers and washing machines. Whirlpool agreed to pay more than $1 billion this summer to acquire a majority stake in Italian company Indesit Co. , a purchase that would roughly double Whirlpool's business in Europe. A bit more good news for American manufacturing as Whirlpool announced it would move its commercial washing-machine production from Mexico to the United States. According to a press release, Whirlpool will shift production of its commercial front-load machines from Monterrey, Mexico to Clyde, Ohio. Sources tell 40/29 News that Whirlpool will be closing its Fort Smith plant sometime in mid-2012. The factory employed 4,600 in 2006. The company said that all Fort Smith production will shift to existing plants in the U.S. and Mexico "to leverage the resources and excess capacity at those facilities."

Fort Smith, Ark. - Whirlpool has expanded its planned layoff of refrigerator factory workers here this fall. 
According to an email sent last week by Whirlpool spokesperson Jill Saletta to The City Wire, a local community paper, the first round of layoffs, announced late last year, will begin in October following the shutdown of counter-depth refrigerator production at the plant.

A second, previously unannounced round of layoffs is expected in November "due to softening of demand, which is typical at this time of year," Saletta wrote.

Whirlpool Corp.'s division in Mexico has announced it will build a $55 million plant in the northern city of Apodaca, employing 1,100 people. That number may sound familiar. The appliance maker announced in August it was shutting down its Evansville manufacturing line in mid-2010 and moving it to Mexico. Evansville's line employs 1,100 people.
