West Jordan • Many professional boxers have colorful and jarring nicknames designed to instill fear in opponents, capture the imagination of the general public and perhaps bring some extra publicity and headlines. But when it came to having a trademark moniker, Utah's Gene Fullmer wasn't like many of his counterparts. In a 2009 interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, Fullmer said he just preferred to be called by the name his parents, Tuff and Mary Fullmer, gave him when he was born in 1931. The former world middleweight boxing champion died late Monday night at a care center near his...

Utah's gentleman bruiser, Don Fullmer, 72, who fought some of the world's most famous boxers and came within a single fight of a world title himself, died peacefully Saturday morning surrounded by the prize he valued most — his family. Fullmer and his boxing brothers, Gene, the oldest and a world middle weight champion in 1957, and Jay, second oldest who left the sport with a 20-5-2 record after an eye injury, put Utah on the international boxing stage in the 1950s and '60s.

A West Jordan teen says his middle school detention supervisor performed sex acts on him while he was being punished -- and with another student sleeping at a desk in the same room. At a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Andrea L. Billingsley, 31, was bound over for trial on seven felonies, including a new rape charge that was added after the teen testified that he also had had sex with her in her car. The teen was 15 when he and a classmate claim they had sexual encounters with Billingsley, who supervised in-school suspension at West Jordan Middle School. Billingsley has...

The family of a US marine held hostage in Iraq today begged for the world to pray his captors will drop their threat to behead him. Militants who abducted Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun - a fluent Arabic speaker of Lebanese descent - have said they will decapitate him unless all Iraqi prisoners are released by coalition forces. No deadline was given, but there is little prospect their demands will be met as a symbolically important Nato conference in Turkey draws to its close tomorrow. It is the first time a coalition soldier has been put under threat of decapitation after...
