A Frenchman who had been on France's terror watchlist after showing signs of having been radicalized to extremist Islam has been accepted into France's police force. The man was placed on the terror watch list in 2012 as a known radical Islamist, and France’s intelligence service DGSI kept him under surveillance for a number of years after being alerted to his behavior, according to French news site RTL. Unaware he was being watched, the man, who has not been named, applied to join the armed forces, but wasn’t successful. He then decided to try to join the French police force....

The case was over the abduction of Dong-Shik, a South Korean who was a permanent resident of the US and had spent seven years providing aid and proselytizing to North Korean defectors. An Israeli NGO announced on Monday that a US federal court in Washington, DC has granted it a historic $330 million default award judgment against North Korea in a civil damages trial for wrongful death, torture and kidnapping. The judgment, only announced Monday, but written on April 9, included $15 million dollars each to the son and brother of Reverend Dong Shik Kim, presumed dead, as well as...

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A former North Carolina police chief whose mother is Italian and father is Somali said Sunday that he’s disappointed with his country of 42 years after he was detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Former Greenville Police Chief Hassan Aden of Alexandria, Virginia, who now works as a law enforcement consultant, said he was detained March 13 on his return trip from Paris for his mother’s 80th birthday. He supports the officers of the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, but he believes his 90-minute detention was unreasonable, he said in a telephone interview.

In the airport terminal the attacker assaulted a patrol of three counter-terrorism soldiers, wrestling one of them to the floor and trying to take her gun. The man was shot dead by patrol officers as they attempted to protect the women and members of the public at the airport, according to France's Interior Ministry.... ...A police source said the man was "a radicalised Muslim known to intelligence services and the justice system" and had a history of thefts and violent robberies.
  • Schumer: Check Transit Employees Against Terror Watch Lists

Federal homeland security officials should move faster to require rail and transit agencies across the nation to screen their employees using federal terrorism watch lists, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said. The New York Democrat told The Associated Press on Saturday that the Department of Homeland Security should immediately step in to enforce a recommendation made nearly a decade ago that mass transit employees be crosschecked with the federal watch lists. “With terror threats from ISIS sympathizers and lone wolves ever possible, it is just not acceptable that every single front line transit employee is not checked against the federal terror...
  • French Prime Minister: 15,000 people on radical Islamist watch list - 'learn to live with terrorism'

Insanity Shortly after the Nice attack, in which an Islamic radical killed 86 people by driving a truck through a crowd watching Bastille Day fireworks, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said France would have to “learn to live with terrorism.” As you might expect, the remark landed with a thud, since people who appease terrorists have a tendency not to live at all. Still, France seems hell-bent on walking a self-destructive path that leans heavily on playing defense. Now, as Reuters reports , we know that the challenges created by such a strategy are growing by the day. Unless things...
  • Why not just strip away all rights of those on watch lists?

    07/03/2016 4:19:58 AM PDT · by UpStateNY · 26 replies
I’ve heard a lot lately about restricting those on the “terror watch list” or “no-fly list” from purchasing a firearm. I get the appeal, because no logical person wants to enable a bad person to do bad things. But if we’re going to restrict the Second Amendment for these people without due process, why stop at just one amendment if it means saving lives? Should people on a terror watch list be allowed to attend a suspected radicalized house of worship? Why allow them to congregate at all? Why is a person suspected of planning terror allowed to have a...
  • How Does the FBI Watch List Work? And Could It Have Prevented Orlando?

Of all the details investigators have uncovered about Orlando terrorist Omar Mateen, perhaps the most infuriating is the fact that he spent 10 months on a government watch list, yet had no trouble buying an assault rifle and a handgun. Authorities placed Mateen on a watch list in May 2013 after coworkers at the Florida courthouse where he was a security guard told authorities he boasted of connections to al Qaeda and other terrorists organizations. He remained on the list for 10 months, and FBI Director James Comey told reporters this week that during that time the agency placed Mateen...

LetÂ’s go back in time to The New York TimesÂ’ 2010 article about then-eight-year-old Mikey Hicks. Was he a cub scout or a terrorist? His parents knew. In fact, most people with cognitive function would know that heÂ’s not hell bent on attacking the country, but our government wasnÂ’t sure. He could be the face of absolute evil, so thank goodness the U.S. Senate could bar him from buying a firearm since heÂ’s on one of the many terror watch lists maintained by the FBI. He never had any due process of law concerning his designation as someone who might...

Man, when Democrats say they’re done worrying about due process, they don’t mess around. Follow the logic here. Republicans argue that we can’t summarily strip people on a terror watch list of their gun rights because there are too many innocents who land on those lists, often due to simple bureaucratic errors like confusing a law-abiding person with a terror suspect whose name is similar. The GOP plan, from John Cornyn, calls for a temporary three-day hold when someone on a list tries to buy a gun while the government goes to court to try to convince a judge that...

Going Inside The Chicago Police Department’s ‘Strategic Subject List’ May 31, 2016 7:58 AM Audio CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago suffered through an especially bloody holiday weekend, with 69 people shot over the Memorial Day weekend, including six fatalities. Police said the vast majority of the victims were on a watchlist of sorts – what the department calls its “strategic subject list.” CBS 2’s Mai Martinez sat down with the Chicago Police Department’s top brass to talk about how the list works. The strategic subject list uses an algorithm to try to predict who is most likely to be involved in...

Obama admin kept secret terrorist 'hands off' list The Department of Homeland Security removed the names of nearly 1,000 individuals suspected of terrorism ties from the U.S. terrorist watch list, according to newly released documents obtained by an advocacy group under a Freedom of Information Act request. The Washington Free Beacon first reported in 2014 that the Obama administration secretly assembled a terrorist “hands off” list that enabled individuals with terrorist ties unfettered entrance into the United States. The latest documents, obtained by Judicial Watch and released on Tuesday, appear to confirm these initial reports. They further disclose that at...

But obviously they weren't following him closely enough. There is no indication at this point that Mohamed Barry had any connection with the Islamic State, but one of their goals is to overwhelm American law enforcement and intelligence agencies with so many jihad plots and jihad attacks and suspected jihadis that they will not be able to keep up, and will collapse from the strain. The fact that "the FBI was looking at Barry for expressing radical Islamic views four years ago" but "moved on from him in their investigation" indicates that this might not be very difficult to do.

A senior Homeland Security official who last week undermined President Obama’s push to ban gun sales to those on the government’s terrorist watch list now says he was mistaken in his sworn testimony to Congress — but Republicans on the panel aren’t buying it. Alan Bersin, assistant secretary for international affairs at Homeland Security, told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee last week that tying gun purchases to the list would be mixing “apples and oranges.”

Congress Must Act to Keep Weapons Away from Terrorists News Release. Rep. Norcross: "Let's Close this Loophole Now" Cherry Hill, NJ - Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today joined members of South Jersey's law enforcement community in calling for immediate action to close the so-called "terrorist background check loophole." The loophole in federal gun laws allows those on the government's terror watch list to legally obtain deadly firearms. The bipartisan Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act, introduced by Rep. Peter King (NY-02), would close that loophole.
  • Banning Gun Sales to People on No-Fly List May Not Be Constitutional, Experts Say (Capt Obvious)

12/11/2015 6:46:15 PM PST · by Red in Blue PA · 22 replies
On Thursday, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy announced plans to issue an executive order barring anyone listed on federal terrorist watch lists from purchasing a gun in the state. But while the idea of “no fly, no gun” has found growing support following the mass shooting in San Bernardino last week, including that of President Obama, experts say such a policy may be unconstitutional. The problem lies with the terrorist watch lists themselves, which are both secret and routinely updated without the typical due process given to those who are accused of breaking the law, such as court proceedings. Without a...
  • White House Can't Name One Mass Shooting That Would Have Been Stopped By New Gun Laws

In today's press briefing, the Obama White House proved what Second Amendment supporters already know: no new gun control laws, especially those proposed by the president, would have prevented any new mass shootings. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was asked by The Wall Street Journal's Byron Tau if there was any shooting that could have been stopped if an assault weapons ban or stricter backgrounds checks, both supported by this administration, were enacted. Earnest deflected and pivoted to the Obama administration's latest proposal that those suspected of being terrorists, of which almost 300,000 on the list have no ties...

If we don't take action against gun violence, then we are complicit in it. That's why on Thursday I announced my intent to sign what would likely be a first-in-the-nation executive order, pending federal government approval, to ban those on government watch lists from buying guns in Connecticut. We have a moment in America to do the right thing. And we in Connecticut are seizing it. It's become routine to watch so many families across the nation hold their breath, hoping - and praying - that loved ones come home. It often feels like these are daily, yet life-changing, tragedies....

That’s actually not quite accurate, but it’s close enough to undermine one of the Left’s arguments about gun control, offered up last night from the Oval Office. Once again, Barack Obama articulated his curious and incomprehensible non-sequitur last night on the subject of gun control and the Department of Homeland Security’s no-fly list. In his Oval Office speech last night, Obama demanded that Congress bar those listed by DHS from purchasing a firearm (transcript via Jeff Dunetz): To begin with, Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun. What...
