Students at the College of William & Mary want Thomas Jefferson’s status removed from campus because they call him an “incestuous rapist†and a “racist.†The Jefferson statue there is now covered in yellow notes that say things including: “he knew it was wrong,†“racist†“rapist,†“black lives matter,†and †stop worshiping racists.†The College of William & Mary, Jefferson’s alma mater, is one of many schools in America where student activists are debating the legacy of the Founding Fathers and demanding the removal of anything that commemorates them. WILLIAMSBURG History was made without fanfare on Saturday. Jessee Vasold, William and Mary's first transgender homecoming queen, took the field at halftime of the Tribe's game against James Madison wearing a red shirt, black pants and a small silver lip ring to applause and not much other notice. Vasold, a junior, and the other members of the homecoming court were introduced to the crowd, posed for pictures, and walked off the field. "I knew I was nominated, but I was just surprised, because there were a lot of other really good candidates on the ballot," Vasold said. "I know all...

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The College of William & Mary in Virginia is looking for a mascot and ideas have ranged from a feathered horse to an asparagus stalk. The school said Monday more than 400 nominations have been submitted. William & Mary for decades was known as the Indians, but the school changed its nickname to Tribe in the 1980s. The NCAA ruled in 2006 that the college could keep the Tribe nickname but its feathered logo was demeaning to Native Americans and had to go. The school's athletic teams will still be called the Tribe, but the college wants...

Dear William & Mary Community, As you know, earlier today the Board of Visitors offered me the presidency of the College of William & Mary, without “interim” in the title. I have accepted and am deeply moved by the Board’s confidence in me and by the enormous support that has come my way from all corners of the William & Mary community over the last six and a half months. We share a marvelous institution. I will do my level best for W&M. We are in this together, however, and the College needs the commitment of us all to move...

The Virginian Pilot has decided that displaying a Christian cross crosses the free speech line. Free speech must allow nude dancing and sex shows because if we close them down, we are on the slippery slope to Fascism. But displaying a cross? Horrors! People will get the idea that anything goes regarding that First Amendment. Let’s read that once again: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government...

The head of the College of William and Mary, Gene Nichol, has resigned in disgrace. Several readers send along his resignation letter. You’ll recall that he roiled the campus with his decision to hide the cross at the famous school chapel to make it “less faith-specific.” More recently, he hosted a sex workers show on campus while restricting critics who wanted to tape it. Here’s his letter:....Dear Members of the William & Mary Community: I was informed by the Rector on Sunday, after our Charter Day celebrations, that my contract will not be renewed in July. Appropriately, serving the College...

The president of the College of William & Mary, Gene R. Nichol, announced his resignation yesterday. His announcement came after he was told that his contract would not be renewed for the coming 2008-2009 academic year. Nichol has a history of clashing with the Board of Visitors and William & Mary alumni since his start as president in 2005. More conservative members opposed Nichol's decision to take down a cross that adorned a chapel used for both secular and religious events. Dissent also arose when he allowed a sex-workers art show to take place at the university; some members of...

Dear Members of the William & Mary Community: I was informed by the Rector on Sunday, after our Charter Day celebrations, that my contract will not be renewed in July. Appropriately, serving the College in the wake of such a decision is beyond my imagining. Accordingly, I have advised the Rector, and announce today, effective immediately, my resignation as president of the College of William & Mary. I return to the faculty of the school of law to resume teaching and writing. I have made four decisions, or sets of decisions, during my tenure that have stirred ample controversy. First,...
