Dayglored's TL;DR: Microsoft created the "Universal Windows Platform" (UWP) to unite Windows 10, Windows Mobile/Phone, Xbox One, and HoloLens. It failed because Windows Phone died the gooey death in competition with Android and iPhone, and the many shortcomings and restrictions UWP imposed on developers and end-users impeded adoption.
