California, Nebraska and Illinois are the only U.S. states that can currently test for coronavirus, the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) told Reuters. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week said some of the testing kits sent to U.S. states and at least 30 countries produced "inconclusive" results due to a flawed component and the CDC planned to send replacement materials to make the kits work. The CDC has set up surge testing capacity until new testing kits become available, said Scott Becker, the executive director of APHL, which represents public health laboratories in the...

An American who was among a group that had been flown out of Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in China, by the U.S. government became the first evacuee to test positive for the coronavirus, health officials said. The patient had arrived at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego last week on one of the State Department flights that ferried Americans from Wuhan. The person was released from a hospital in San Diego to return to federal quarantine after initial tests indicated they weren’t infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The patient...

A 35-year-old Washington, D.C., man visited an urgent care clinic on Jan. 19, a few days after returning from Wuhan, China. After undergoing testing, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that he had contracted the 2019-nCoV coronavirus—the first such case in the United States. Since surfacing in Wuhan in December, the 2019-nCoV coronavirus has spread to nearly 30 countries, killing 565 and infecting more than 28,000 worldwide. As of this writing, 12 cases have been confirmed in the U.S. Note that these numbers are changing almost every hour. As cases began to emerge within American borders, the Trump...

U.S. health officials are currently monitoring 110 people across 26 states for the coronavirus, including the five patients who contracted the deadly infection in China and brought it back to America. The disease, which has killed at least 81 people in China and sickened more than 2,800 worldwide, isn’t spreading within the community in the U.S. and the risk to the public right now is still considered low, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call Monday. “We understand that many people in the United States are worried...
