If you ever find yourself at a cocktail party of astrophysicists and don't know what to say, try this: "But what about the angular momentum?" No matter what the topic of conversation, you'll be guaranteed to sound erudite. Nearly every field of astronomy, from galaxy formation to star formation, has an "angular momentum problem." Nothing in the cosmos ever seems to spin or orbit at the rate it should. The moon is no exception. It is the flywheel to end all flywheels; if its orbital angular momentum were transferred to Earth's axial rotation, our planet would come close to spinning ...

The president of the UC Santa Cruz Jewish Student Union (JSU) was warned to abstain”from voting earlier this week on a pro-BDS resolution because he was “elected with a Jewish agenda.” JNS.org reports that the incident occurred prior to a vote by the council on an earlier Israel divestment bill. On Tuesday, the UCSC student council voted 28 for and five against, with seven abstaining, to reinstate a divestment resolution that had been vetoed in 2014. In a text message sent to President Daniel Bernstein prior to that vote, the sender wrote, “You will be abstaining, as the president of...

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. —Six young protesters are blocking Highway 1 in Santa Cruz where the fishhook merges with Highway 17. A California Highway Patrol officer told KSBW that the protesters are University of California Santa Cruz students. They are using their bodies, trash cans filled with cement, and pipes to block southbound lanes. Students are linked together and laying down across the usually-busy highway. While holding a banner reading "Fight The Hikes," demonstrators said they are standing up against tuition hikes by the University of California system, as well as police brutality.

SANTA CRUZ -- UC Santa Cruz is charging 36 students $944 each in restitution for their involvement in November's occupation of the main campus administration building, officials confirmed Monday. Of the 45 students investigated, 36 were found to have played some role in the protest over student fee hikes, an incident that caused nearly $34,000 in damage, spokesman Jim Burns said. The cost of the repairs was split evenly among the students. Additionally, Judicial Affairs Officer Douglas Zuidema recommended in letters issued April 7 that seven of the students be dismissed, suspended or placed on probation, while 29 others received...

UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Denice Denton, apparently despondent over work and personal issues, died Saturday after she jumped from the roof of a 42-story San Francisco apartment building, police said. Denton's partner, Gretchen Kalonji, is listed as having an apartment in the building. Denton, a well-regarded engineer, had been named this spring in a series of articles examining UC management compensation. She had been criticized for an expensive university-funded renovation on her campus home, and for obtaining a UC administrative job for Kalonji. Denton, 46, died Saturday morning after jumping from the Paramount at Mission and Third streets, police said....
