Former Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino (D) — he stepped down a couple of weeks ago — has pleaded guilty today to federal charges of money laundering, according to the McAllen Monitor. Just 17 days after stepping down as sheriff and three days after his former chief of staff entered a related plea, Treviño stood before U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez and pleaded guilty for his part in laundering campaign contributions that were tied to a convicted drug trafficker. Testimony in court this morning suggested that the amount of money laundered could be anywhere between $70,000 and $120,000. Treviño was...

I just received word that a friend of mine, her teenaged daughter, her daughter-in-law, grandson and granddaughter were in an accident last night. My dear friend and her daughter were killed, the daughter-in-law is brain dead. Grandson is critical and granddaughter is in serious condition. Her husband and son are headed home from Iraq where they were serving as I write this. Please lift this family up to the Lord that he comforts and supports them as they go thru this difficult time. Thank you all so very much.

On May 1, 2008, Richard V. Stevens, of Stevens & Brash, L.L.C, won an acquittal in the case of Sgt. Leonardo Treviño. The week before, Frank Spinner, a counsel with the firm, defended SFC Corrales in a separate case. For background on the cases, see here and here. Rich sent this message for readers of Defend Our Troops and Defend Our Marines._______________________________________________ 10 May 2008 It is very difficult and confusing for our military members and their families, who have sacrificed and contributed so much to the military's missions, to suddenly face accusations of crimes out of combat in the...

FORT HOOD, Texas - A military jury Thursday acquitted an Army sergeant of premeditated murder in the death of an unarmed Iraqi insurgent who was killed in a village overrun by al-Qaida operatives. The family of Sgt. Leonardo Trevino gasped, clapped and sobbed after the verdict in his court-martial was read. The 31-year-old from San Antonio also was cleared on charges of attempted murder, solicitation to commit murder and three counts of obstruction of justice. Trevino said he felt betrayed by the soldiers who testified against him but that he held no ill will toward the Army.

FORT HOOD, Texas - An Army sergeant charged with fatally shooting a wounded and unarmed Iraqi insurgent has been released from jail while awaiting trial. Sgt. Leonardo Trevino is now spending his days working at Fort Hood, after a military judge ruled late Tuesday that pretrial confinement was not warranted. Trevino, 30, of San Antonio, had been held since he was charged in September, first in Kuwait and then at the Bell County Jail in Belton after his unit returned in November. "There are no words to describe how overwhelmed I am with happiness," his wife, Veronica Trevino, told the...

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - An Army sergeant kicked and shot an Iraqi insurgent who lay bleeding from nearly two dozen gunshot wounds, then after he was dead told fellow soldiers to say the man had been armed, a private at the scene testified Tuesday. Sgt. Leonardo Trevino, 30, is charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder, assault and obstruction of justice in the suspected June incidents in Muqdadiyah, Iraq. After the Article 32 hearing, similar to a civilian grand jury, the investigating officer will decide whether there is enough evidence to support the charges and then recommend whether to refer...

    - There were plenty of red faces at Villanova University over the weekend. That's because of a lot of blue language by a comic at a school welcome event. The comedy show was part of freshman orientation held last Friday night, but the comedian hired by the orientation committee of staff and students got the hook 15 minutes into his hour and a half show. Los Angeles-based comedian Steve Trevino is billed as one of the countries up and coming comics, but when he took the stage at the Pavilion, incoming Villanova freshman and staff weren't laughing for very long....

Josh Trevino (a la Tacitus) wrote this account of uber-celebrity Ashley Judd on a trip to Africa. Someone's lawyers didn't like it - so it was removed from its initial page. Luckily for the world at large - I saved a copy. Whom the Gods Would Destroy....They first make jaw-droppingly attractive and immensely famous. Exhibit A: Ashley Judd, world-renowned actress, would-be leftist political agitator, and self-regarded humanitarian. I see in the latest issue of Glamour -- because someone showed me -- that Ms Judd has had some troubles. Deeply personal troubles. Inner, psychological troubles, including Ò[c]odependence in my relationships; depression;...
