  • Greens ready for Trump war

Environmental groups are ready for a fight with President-elect Donald Trump. Trump’s victory in November’s presidential election was a shock to the green movement, which is now consolidating opposition to a GOP-controlled government bent on undoing President Obama’s environmental agenda. If the initial reaction was depression and despair, environmental activists now sound energized to take on Trump. "Our goal is to channel that sense of outrage into political pressure," said Jamie Henn, the co-founder of climate group 350.org.

Reuters reports, “Pope Francis urged national leaders on Monday to implement global environmental agreements without delay, a message that looked to be squarely aimed at U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. “Addressing a group of scientists that included theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, the pope gave his strongest speech on the environment since the election of Trump, who has threatened to pull out of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.
  • Catholic leaders: climate change on same level as abortion and death penalty

Opposition to abortion and the death penalty have long been cardinal beliefs for the Roman Catholic church, whose faithful make up about a quarter of all Americans. What if fighting climate change becomes an equally passionate issue in parishes nationwide? The foremost group of Catholic leaders in the U.S. is ramping up a campaign to do just that, urging priests and congregations from San Diego to Atlanta to think about global warming as a sanctity-of-life issue. Some Catholic experts have even likened the growing campaign to deal with human-caused climate change to the revered pro-life movement — calling on the...

The Pope wrote a message a United Nations convention on climate change The vulnerability of the poor and of future generations to the impact of climate change creates a “serious ethical and moral responsibility to act without delay and as free as possible from political and economic pressure” to slow climate change and protect the environment, Pope Francis said. In a written message to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference in Marrakech, Morocco, Pope Francis praised the 100 countries that formally joined the Paris climate agreement adopted last year, but emphasised that implementing the agreement must involve...

Members of the Pontifical Academy for Life will no longer be required to sign a declaration that they uphold the Church’s pro-life teachings. In new statutes for the Vatican body promulgated on November 4, Pope Francis has also expanded its mandate to include a focus on the environment. Pope Francis approved the statutes last month, the Vatican website announced. Previous statutes were issued in 2004 and enumerate the “specific tasks” (§2) of the Academy in three points: to “study questions and issues connected with the promotion and defense of human life from an interdisciplinary perspective,” to “educate in a culture...

Costa Rica has announced that it will be the first country in the world to shut down its zoos and free the captive animals they hold. Costa Rica is an especially biodiverse country, holding about 4% of the world's known species. Sadly, the country is contractually obligated to keep two of its zoos open for another decade. Still, after that, they plan to shut it down in favor of a cage-free habitat for the animals to live in. Treehugger reports that the nation, which also recently banned hunting for sport, will close the last two zoos in the next 10...

Pope Francis reaffirmed the Vatican’s support for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a June pontifical conference on human trafficking that featured an address by abortion and population control advocate Jeffrey Sachs. “We can also count an important and decisive collaboration with the United Nations,” the Holy Father told the Judges Summit Against Human Trafficking and Organized Crime, organized by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. Added the pope: “I am grateful for the fact that the representatives of the 193 UN member states unanimously approved the new Sustainable Development Goals.” In his turn, Sachs, a Harvard-educated economist, bestselling...

A young Israeli rabbi, Yonatan Neril, especially committed to developing the relation between faith and ecology, has taken to heart Pope Francis’ repeated call to take action to protect the environment against climate change. Rabbi Neril is founder and director of the Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development in Jerusalem, which just completed a groundbreaking new survey of 48 Catholic seminaries in North America, Rome and the Holy Land aimed at discovering the extent to which these institutions are taking seriously Francis’ warning and plea. ICSD is a nonprofit organization that works to catalyze a transition to a sustainable human society...

See the world through the eyes of the Creator, Pope Francis said at the end of his general audience in St. Peter's Square on Wednesday, marking Earth Day. “I exhort everyone to see the world through the eyes of God the Creator: the earth is an environment to be safeguarded, a garden to be cultivated,” he said. “The relationship of mankind with nature must not be conducted with greed, manipulation and exploitation, but it must conserve the divine harmony that exists between creatures and Creation within the logic of respect and care, so it can be put to the service...
  • THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS NOT THE BERGOGLIO PARTY (Catholic Caucus)

To the courageous headline in yesterday’s “Libero” (“The Pope’s Party. The Vatican’s Political Shift”.) only one idea should be added: the Bergoglio Party is one thing (which is its doing harm, but will fade with him), the Catholic Church is another. The other day Matteo Salvini* rightly noted this in the polemics he had with Monsignor Galantino. Plus, the very caustic interview with Giovanni Sartori - the king of political analysts - helped clarify it all: “For me this Vatican that utters such nonsense is a disaster. They aren’t interested at all in the real facts and focus on very...

Harvesting the Truth of the Vatican II ^ | June 19, 2015 | Louie Verrecchio
The number one most important lesson to be learned from the document’s 40,000+ words is the indisputable reality that the Catholic Church in our day; more precisely, the men who are leading her and duly running her into the ground, the Bishop of Rome chief among them, has little concern for the mission that was given to the Church by Christ the King.
  • Why I’m Disregarding Laudato Si and You Should Too

    The Remnant Newspaper ^ | June 19, 2015 | Chris Jackson
Having wasted over an hour of my life, I now can say that I have read Laudato Si. It is the Pope’s latest verbose tome of an encyclical, which: espouses global warming alarmism, calls for international organizations to police climate change, and waxes poetic about people leading animals to God. In short it is as if Al Gore, Karl Marx, and Teilhard de Chardin wrote an encyclical. What’s worse is that because it came from a Pope, otherwise sane and rational people are actually taking it seriously.

Courtesy of Vox Cantoris, we are alerted to the astonishing end of the encyclical, Laudato Si. I wonder if any paragraph worse than this could have been written by any Pope. The text is below. This is not a draft. It is the official version from the Vatican site. 246. At the conclusion of this lengthy reflection which has been both joyful and troubling, I propose that we offer two prayers. The first we can share with all who believe in a God who is the all-powerful Creator, while in the other we Christians ask for inspiration to take up...

There’s a big holiday coming up and we wanted to make sure you were reminded far enough in advance to get a card. No… I’m not talking about Valentines Day. It’s Global Divestment Day! (Incidentally, Global Divestment Day, takes place on February 13th & 14th. Sounds like it should be Global Divestment Days to me, but what can you do?) This is apparently the day(s) when environmental activists push all of the colleges and universities to divest from fossil fuel companies because the money is evil or something. To spearhead these activities, the interested parties have tapped the talent and...

Why is it that both the Vatican and the Obama White House feel they can be so open and candid about their close collaboration? Is the Administration part of the Catholic Church or is the Church a mouthpiece for the Administration... or is Communism just a modern word for the Gospel, like Pope Francis says? Why do we keep hearing the same ugly messages wherever we look? He has been called the “superman pope”, and it would be hard to deny that Pope Francis has had a good December. Cited by President Barack Obama as a key player in the thawing relations between the US and Cuba, the Argentinian pontiff followed that by lecturing his cardinals on the need to clean up Vatican politics. But can Francis achieve a feat that has so far eluded secular powers and inspire decisive action on climate change? It looks as if he will give it a go.
