A jaguar featured at an Olympic torch ceremony was shot dead by a soldier shortly after the event in the Brazilian Amazon city of Manaus as the animal escaped from its handlers, an army statement said. The jaguar was killed on Monday at a zoo attached to a military training center when a soldier fired a single pistol shot after the animal, despite being tranquilized, approached the soldier, the army said. “We made a mistake in permitting the Olympic torch, a symbol of peace and unity, to be exhibited alongside a chained wild animal. This image goes against our beliefs...

"On the morning of November 8, 1942, a force of over 70,000 American and British soldiers went ashore on the coast of Vichy French North-West Africa, and a period of close Anglo-American co-operation began. Altogether over 500 ships had carried and guarded the assault force: 102 of them crossing the Atlantic from America; the remainder sailing in two convoys - one fast and one slow - from Britain. They all arrived at their destinations within a few hours of each other and a pattern of smooth timing and organisation had been set."

No one knows how long he sat inside the green rental car and waited. Authorities say Matthew Wong, 50, watched the door of his wife's apartment early Monday, waiting for her to step outside. Thick, black garbage bags shrouded the backseat windows. A quilt covered the rear window. "It appears it was all planned," said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman Larry McKinnon. "He was waiting out there to ambush her." What Wong hadn't planned on, deputies said, was getting caught in the flames that he had hoped would kill his wife, Gloria Davis, 47. After residents of the Countrywood Apartments,...

Burdened by debt and driving home from a night of gambling in West Virginia, Sergio Lopez launched a scheme that at the time must have seemed like a good idea. He pulled his Volkswagen Jetta up to a random corner in Silver Spring, doused the interior with gasoline, set it on fire and walked away. He later made a claim to Nationwide Insurance. The car was missing, he said -- someone must have stolen it. Add Lopez, who pleaded guilty in the case this year, to the band of Washington area residents who have torched their cars hoping for a...

(IsraelNN.com) Arabs burned Jewish-owned wheat fields in the Samaria town of Yitzhar Friday. The regular vandalism has led residents to ponder soliciting assistance from humanitarian groups. The most recent fire was set Friday, minutes before the onset of Shabbat. A volunteer fire brigade made up of Yitzhar residents succeeded in extinguishing the fire, but were then attacked by Arabs rioting and throwing stones at them. A contingent of IDF soldiers arrived on the scene and used non-lethal riot-control methods to restore order, but residents say their complaints usually result in no response whatsoever from security forces. The fields, which were...

There was none of the violence or disruption that marred the torch relay in London or Paris, and the Olympic flame travelled uninterrupted through Canberra, the capital. But observers said that behind the barricades Chinese nationals assaulted Tibetan activists and tore down their flags. Confrontations between an estimated 15,000 China supporters and...

European business officials warn China over consequences of boycott BEIJING - EUROPEAN business officials warned on Wednesday that calls in China for a boycott of French products since the raucous Olympic torch relay in Paris could spark a backlash against Chinese exports. France and high-profile French retailer Carrefour have been singled out by Chinese nationalists who saw the April 7 protests against the torch relay by pro-Tibetan groups and others as an insult to their national pride. Anger climaxed this past weekend with protests at the French Embassy in Beijing and at Carrefour outlets in at least nine Chinese cities....

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan will not allow the squad of Chinese flame guards to intervene with the Beijing Olympic torch's progress when it arrives in a Japanese city this month, the national police head was quoted as saying on Friday. New Delhi, April 11 (IANS) India has conveyed to China that the Tibetans have a right to hold peaceful demonstrations in a democratic country and that it will take a final decision on allowing Chinese security for the Olympic torch relay here next week. “It is India’s responsibility to ensure security of the Olympic torch through its territory. We have discussed the security of the torch with the Chinese,” official sources said Friday. “Nothing has been decided, however, to allow Chinese security personnel to be part of the security ring. That decision will depend on the situation immediately before the...
