Diethylene glycol, a poisonous ingredient in some antifreeze, has been found in 6,000 tubes of toothpaste in Panama, and customs officials there said Friday that the product appeared to have originated in China. ``Our preliminary information is that it came from China, but we don't know that with certainty yet,'' said Daniel Delgado Diamante, Panama's director of customs. ``We are still checking all the possible imports to see if there could be other shipments.'' Some of the toothpaste, which arrived several months ago in the free trade zone next to the Panama Canal, was re-exported to the Dominican Republic in...

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County has started picking up some of the things people have jettisoned for security reasons as they board flights at the Eugene Airport. Charley Harvey, assistant executive director of the charity, dug through trash bags Tuesday and took every bottle of shampoo and shaving cream he could find. The items will be distributed at the organization's First Place...

Dozens of toothpastes sold at supermarkets are at the centre of a cancer alert today. Anti-bacterial cleaning products, including dishwashing liquid and handwash, are also affected. Researchers have discovered that triclosan, a chemical in the products, can react with water to produce chloroform gas. If inhaled in large enough quantities, chloroform can cause depression, liver problems and, in some cases, cancer. An Evening Standard investigation found dozens of products on supermarket shelves containing the chemical, from brand names including Colgate, Aquafresh, Dentyl and Sensodyne. Marks& Spencer confirmed today it was removing products containing triclosan from all its stores and has...

Gay Marriage! What, Are You NUTS? Posted by Doc Farmer Saturday, June 21, 2003 Our neighbours to the North--the Canadians (or, as Robin Williams described them, ''a loft apartment above a really great party'')--have come up with a new touchy-feely (Ick!) concept to make the world a better, if more bizarre place. State-recognised same-sex marriages. Now, I want to talk to all of the homosexuals out there reading this article. As a male lesbian, I can sympathize with you. Well, somewhat. And I want to ask you all a very important question. HAVE YOU LOST YOUR TINY LITTLE MINDS? I’m...
