The National Rifle Assn. is urging its California members to vote against Republican Senate candidate Tom Campbell “to protect your gun rights and hunting heritage in California.” The bright orange postcard, which went out over the weekend, faults Campbell for favoring gun show regulations, a waiting period for handgun purchases and restrictions on the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons. Campbell defended his record on 2nd Amendment issues in an e-mail to a handful of voters who sought clarification from his campaign after receiving the mailing. While lobbying groups often attack candidates who don’t score 100% on their issues, he said,...

SAN DIEGO — Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tom Campbell said Monday he would have voted to confirm one of President Barack Obama’s U.S. Supreme Court nominees but not the other. He said he would have voted for Justice Sonia Sotomayor, but would vote against Solicitor General Elena Kagan, whom Obama nominated last week to replace the retiring Justice John Paul Stevens. Campbell said Kagan has insufficient experience. “Justice Sotomayor had 20 years of experience,” Campbell said at a meeting with about a dozen young professionals, mostly recent law school graduates, in the conference room of a Liberty Station law office....

Tom Campbell is seen as a moderate Republican, although he’s a Friedmanite conservative on economic issues. But his moderate pose has made him the most acceptable to the general electorate in California among the three candidates in the June GOP Senate primary. Campbell posts the best numbers against Barbara Boxer, basically in a dead heat, while Carly Fiorina and Chuck DeVore trail. Given this reality, you’d think that Campbell would be pressing this advantage and making sure he wins the nomination from a state GOP that trends far to the right. But instead, he’s chopped his ad buy. Ex-Rep. Tom...

Some time after he bowed out of the governor's race in January and jumped into the California GOP primary to challenge Sen. Barbara Boxer, Tom Campbell turned from a mild-mannered law professor into Rambo. Professor Rambo. He wrote a piece for www.foxandhoundsdaily.com against "Mirandizing" (reading Miranda rights to) terrorism suspects. He supports the new pumped-up Arizona immigration law. Manmade global warming? Campbell told The Chronicle's editorial board that he goes by what he reads in the Economist. And: "I must say, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) made a hash of it." Campbell has held a special place in...

Is Carly Fiorina pro-life? The question has come to the fore of late, as she publicly contemplates a candidacy for United States Senate against Barbara Boxer — and as her opponent for the California Republicans’ nomination in that race, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, has publicly questioned her pro-life credentials. (Full disclosure: I’m a member of the DeVore campaign, so read the following with Reagan’s appropriated Russian dictum to “trust, but verify,” in mind.) An examination of the Fiorina record on this topic reveals worrying inconsistencies. Any review of Fiorina’s pro-life convictions must acknowledge that for the past 20 months, when pressed...

Fellow conservatives, please welcome US Senate candidate from the great state of California, Lt. Colonel Chuck DeVore! Chuck is THE candidate in the race for the GOP Senate nomination who has a proven track record of both fiscal and social conservatism. He is pro-life, pro-gun, pro-God, and equally important, strictly pro-Constitution. He is currently serving his third term in the California Assembly and is a Lt. Colonel in the US Army Reserve. Chuck also was a Ronald Reagan appointee to serve as Special Assistant for Foreign Affairs in the Pentagon from 1986-88. And Chuck shares the Gipper’s philosophy on governance...

The following is allegedly an email from Tom Campbell. "David" wrote to him asking for clarification of his position on using the TSA "No-fly" list to prohibit the purchase or possession of a firearm by a listed individual. Mr. Campbell supposedly supports using the TSA's list to deny Americans their Constitutional right to keep and bear arms and to do so without a trial... ----- Forwarded Message ----From: Tom Campbell To:Sent: Thu, May 13, 2010 9:15:16 AMSubject: Thank you for contacting me - Tom Campbell Dear David, Thank you for taking the time to provide me with your insight about...

Running last in most polls, Republican Assemblyman Chuck DeVore says he knows what would allow him to win California's GOP Senate primary: a murder-suicide pact. His thinking goes like this: In the final days of the campaign, former businesswoman Carly Fiorina uses her advertising to beat up on frontrunner former Rep. Tom Campbell - that would be the murder - and then Fiorina pays the price with voters for going negative - that would be the suicide.

Embattled Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer remains in a virtual tie with Republican challenger Tom Campbell, but two other GOP hopefuls are still failing to gain traction in California’s race for the U.S. Senate. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in California shows Boxer with 42% support in a match-up with Campbell, a former congressman, who earns 41%. Five percent (5%) prefer some other candidate, and 12% remain undecided. These numbers have changed little since March and April. But Boxer now posts a 45% to 38% lead over former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina. Given that match-up, four percent...

Former Republican Rep. Tom Campbell is feeling good about the latest SurveyUSA poll, which shows him opening up an 11-point lead over former businesswoman Carly Fiorina in California's GOP Senate race.

...Campbell said that if he were in the Senate, he would vote “no” on the nomination — with the caveat that he would consider any additional information that emerges in the Senate hearings. Orange County Assemblyman Chuck DeVore would also vote against Kagan’s nomination if he were in the Senate, his spokesman said, adding that DeVore would release a statement detailing his reasons later this evening. Fiorina said she would reserve judgment until the vetting is completed. “Given Ms. Kagan’s brief litigation experience, lack of any judicial experience and in light of some of the information publicly available about her...

The three major Republican candidates for U.S. Senate jousted Thursday over which would be the most effective steward of conservative principles, covering territory from Afghanistan to gun rights in their first face-to-face debate of the primary season. Orange County Assemblyman Chuck DeVore repeatedly questioned the conservative credentials of former Rep. Tom Campbell and sought to cast Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, as inconsistent on issues such as immigration and the Wall Street bailout. .. Minutes into the debate DeVore lobbed his opening attack on Campbell's record on taxes, faulting him for supporting temporary tax increases last year —...

All but one of the top Republican candidates for governor and Senate support the new anti-illegal immigration law in Arizona, now that Steve Poizner and Carly Fiorina have joined Tom Campbell and Chuck DeVore in backing it. “I think I have a better plan for California,” GOP governor candidate Meg Whitman told Register editorial and and news writers today. She reiterated her call to tighten up border security and crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. She said that would address 90 percent of the problem – and that the Arizona law means a lot of legal controversy ahead....

Washington (CNN) – Sarah Palin broke ranks with the conservative movement on Thursday and endorsed former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina in California's Republican Senate primary, prompting a flurry of criticism from many of her loyal supporters. After Palin announced the endorsement on her Facebook page, a number of her followers questioned why she would side with Fiorina instead of the more conservative candidate in the race, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore. DeVore has the backing of several leading voices in the conservative movement, including Sen. Jim DeMint, RedState.com editor Erick Erickson and the Tea Party Express. Though a handful of readers agreed...

The Demon Sheep of Zion It is time to say openly what Jewish Republicans in California whisper quietly: throughout her years in public life, Carly Fiorina never associated demonstrably with those supporting a secure and safe Israel with united Jerusalem as her capital. Quite the contrary: everything she has written, down to her memoirs, points otherwise. Everything she has said – the curious way and timing of her pronouncements on the Middle East – points otherwise. Even her close associations, as with the Reverend Jesse Jackson , augur otherwise. There is something unseemly in Ms. Fiorina’s posturing on Israel in...

In California Senate primary, Republicans fear RINO label WASHINGTON — In California and across the nation, it's open season on RINOs. For many conservatives, there's nothing worse than being a RINO — that's a Republican In Name Only, a moderate, a politician who's allegedly squishy on core principles and a little too independent. When California Republicans go to the polls to choose a Senate candidate next month, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore says he'll be the only non-RINO on the ballot. He says both of his challengers, former Rep. Tom Campbell and former businesswoman Carly Fiorina, are true RINOS: Campbell because he...

DeVore and Campbell explained their reasoning in interviews. "I certainly view it as a symptom of the fact that the federal government has still not become serious about implementing or enforcing immigration law," DeVore said. "You know, the Arizona law is a cry for help for the federal government to start doing its job. And I think the reaction from Democrats against it is just more proof that not only do the Democrats not oppose illegal immigration, they in fact celebrate it." Should California pass a similar law? "I think California would benefit from passing a similar law, but it...

DeVore Slams Backroom Deals, Only Republican To Oppose Maldonado Confirmation FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- (SACRAMENTO) – California State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, (R-70-Irvine), today spoke out against the backroom deals involved in the effort to confirm state Senator Abel Maldonado as California’s Lieutenant Governor. He then voted against the motion to confirm Maldonado and urged other lawmakers to do the same. DeVore cited Maldonado’s vote for the higher taxes included in 2009’s Proposition 1A in exchange for an agreement by the Governor and Democrat leaders to place Proposition 14, the open primary measure that infringes upon the rights of partisan voters...
