On Tuesday, June 27, it will be 50 years since the first automated cash dispenser – which came to be known as an automated teller machine (ATM) – was inaugurated in London. Just thinking about it brings a smile to my face. I belong to the generation who stood 45 minutes to an hour to deposit or cash checks in the pre-ATM era. I remember getting yelled at for taking my bicycle through the drive-up line at the National Bank of Detroit to avoid the much longer line inside. It did not take me very long to become an early...

When pressed for an answer to "Paying tithes was under the Law", some retort that Christians are required to pay tithes because Abraham's paying of tithes to Melchizedek preceded to Law. In reply to that, do the scriptures say in Genesis chapter 14 that Abraham was compelled to pay tithes, or was it rather a free will tithe offering, unlike the compelled tithe that was enacted under the Law? In Deuteronomy 14:26 (NIV), it says that those who attended a particular feast day that they could "...Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented...

In certain passages of scripture it says that tithes are to be given to the Levites, and then the Levites were to give a tenth to the priests. In other scriptures is says to bring ye the tithe into the storehouse, that my house may be full. Deuteronomy 26:12 says that every third year, that in addition to giving to the Levites, some of the tithe must go to widows, orphans, (the down-and-out), etc. Now, if in modern times we give tithes to our local church that we attend and tithes are then used to pay for the pastors salary...

A court-appointed receiver is suing the LDS Church for tithes made by a Utah man accused of securities fraud. In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court, Lon A. Jenkins claims that Robert Casey Hall fraudulently transferred $160,306 to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through one of his companies and its entities. The money — which was tithed in six payments from May to October of 2006 by RCH2 LLC, Future Tech LLC and WW LLC — is among the assets that Jenkins is trying to take control of as receiver in a civil enforcement suit...

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The city tax collector is ready to put a local church that has been in New London since 1835 on the auction block for payment of a $4,339 tax bill. At issue is a bill sent out last July for property that the Second Congregational Church rents to the nonprofit Drop-In Learning Center.
