The Tea Party movement takes its name from the Boston Tea Party of 1773, when American patriots dumped British tea into Boston Harbor to protest British imperial power. But while New England was the center of resistance to the British empire, there are few New Englanders to be found in today's Tea Party movement. Jimmy Carter has made an outrageous, unfounded and potentially inflammatory remark about race. He has claimed that a great proportion of the vitriolic opposition to President Obama’s health reforms and spending plans are actually motivated by racial hatred: that this president is being attacked not for his policies but for his colour. He offers no evidence for this extraordinary assertion presumably because there is none. The town hall meetings in which the Obama healthcare plans have been attacked with such vehemence have not been characterised by racist slur or even oblique references to the president’s skin colour.

BELLEVILLE — A Belleville West High School student was beaten aboard a bus on the way to school Monday, and a police spokesman said the beating could be racially motivated. The 17-year-old victim was white and the teen assailants were black. Police released a video of the beating, which shows the victim being punched repeatedly while other students on the bus gather to watch, some cheering.
