I spent the last few days down on the Texas/Mexico Border. One of my brothers got married to a Hispanic woman down here so we all came down for the wedding. We had a great time down here and I got to talk to a bunch of new family members. Some of the small talk we had of course wandered into the topic of border violence and life on the border. I don't know what's been going on in DISD for the last several years when it comes to educating black students, but for some reason the kids are increasingly performing worse than Hispanic and white students. DISD has begun to realize that black students are falling way behind and has implemented measures to address the problem, including a math initiative geared towards black students. DISD and outside groups also are providing mentoring-type programs for young black males.
