I guesshe won't be using Bill Clinton's old line, "I feel your pain," when people complain about the terrible economy. How presidential, how empathetic: At a Silicon Valley fundraiser Sunday, the president took a jab at Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry, saying that he's a "governor whose state is on fire, denying climate change." Aside from the fact that this is just a cheap political shot at the expense of Americans who are suffering, it is just not funny and weird.

According to KVUE-TV, the state of Texas, under Gov. Rick Perry, cut state funding for the volunteer fire departments that protect most of the state from wildfires. Firefighters have actually been dipping into their own pockets to fight fires. Volunteer departments that were already facing financial strain had their funding cut from $30 million to $7 million. There are 879 volunteer fire departments in Texas; 114 are paid fire departments, while 187 departments are a combination of volunteer and paid. UPDATE 7:30 P.M.: Mark Stanford, the fire chief for the Texas Forest Service , said subdivisions have been evacuated there but they have no estimate on what structures have been lost. People are being told to evacuate to the First Baptist Church in Smithville and Bastrop Middle School, Stanford said. In addition, State Highways 71 and 21 in Bastrop County have been closed, Stanford said.
