Sen. Hollings: A Feisty Farewell Dec. 10, 2004 Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings tells Mike Wallace that America’s lawmaking system is addicted to money. "[Special interests] get their piece of the pie. That's our problem. Today, you can't find the real interests of the country." Sen. Fritz Hollings (CBS) South Carolina Sen. Fritz Hollings has long been known as the tartest tongue in the Senate. But now, this feisty senator is giving up his seat. He didn't lose it, and a younger Republican didn't defeat him. But after 38 years, he just decided enough's enough. He says the Senate has changed...

WASHINGTON — Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.), promoting his lifelong passion for the U.S. Constitution, has inserted into a massive federal spending bill a requirement that schools devote at least part of a day each year to teaching about the document. The provision would apply to all schools, elementary through college, that receive federal aid. Education groups worry that the provision could be the opening wedge in a campaign by Washington to influence what schools teach. Byrd carries a copy of the Constitution in his breast pocket — over his heart — and often waves it on the Senate floor....

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article in response to a Jane Smiley missive posted on Slate.com (''The Unteachable Ignorance of the Red States'') diagnosing the results of the 2004 Presidential Election. It is something to admire that Ms. Smiley’s reaction was not apoplectic as such (I had to look that big word up in a thesaurus--and, while I was at it, I discovered, having forgotten what I was doing, that there simply is no synonym for thesaurus!) As some might remember, I took exception to her reading of the results. Specifically, to put it in terms that all...

TERESA: TEACHING ISN'T A 'REAL JOB' [10/20 12:19 PM] From USA Today interview with Teresa Heinz Kerry: Q: You'd be different from Laura Bush? A: Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good. But I don't know that she's ever had a real job — I mean, since she's been grown up. What arrogance. Stunning, unmitigated arrogance! From the White House: Inspired by her second grade teacher, she earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Southern Methodist University in 1968. She...

When you think the Holy Catholic Church cannot possibly endure further attacks or dissent from within, something painfully happens to prove the contrary. The official web site of St. Joseph's University - a Jesuit institution established in 1851 in Philadelphia - openly announces a pro-homosexual event called "Rainbow Week." According to information posted on this website, a "Mass for Rainbow Week" on October 10 was celebrated in the campus chapel to mark the beginning of the weeklong program. Among other pro-homosexual activities, a morally offensive exhibit titled "Love Makes a Family" will display photos of "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender...

Best and Worst of the Debate Best Kerry Line of the Debate: "From the looks of the people in this audience, the only ones in this room who will be affected by the president's tax cut for the rich will be myself, the president, and Charles Gibson." Kerry's inner snob made an appearance last night at the debate. How could he tell the annual income of the audience? I guess no one was wearing Prada. One must have a trained eye for spotting designer clothes. Maybe there were no five hundred dollar haircuts like the one Kerry sports. There might...

One of the major concerns of the Association for World Education is the elimination of intolerance based on religion and belief. And, clearly, education is an essential part of developing a spirit of co-operation and respect toward the “Other”. Before turning to the theme which I was asked to address, I would like to provide a brief historical note on Egypt. In 1836 Edward Lane published An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians. Referring to the intellectual education of Egyptian male children he remarked: “He receives also lessons of religious pride, and learns to hate the Christians,...

http://www.donfeder.com/ A PURPLE HEART FOR JOHNNY JIHAD? By Don Feder Last week, John Walker Lindh petitioned the president to commute his 20-year sentence for fighting with the Taliban, imposed in 2002. It’s a shame that this pampered child of Marin County is sitting in a cell for something as trivial as treason. Under a plea bargain, Walker Lindh (AKA: Abdul Hamid, AKA: Sulayman Al-Lindh) pleaded guilty to supplying services to the Taliban regime and carrying explosives for Afghanistan’s former rulers. Which is like to saying that Benedict Arnold supplied services to George III. Johnny Jihad trained in an al-Qaeda camp...

Parents Make Plans in Their HeartsForming Our Children's CharacterJeff Smith My family, like yours, is a unique combination of traits and personalities. My wife, Jeanne, and I have our strengths and weaknesses. So does each of our five children. One son tends to be affectionate. One child is diligent and responsible. Another is creative, joyful, and enthusiastic. Some of our kids are quite self-confident. Of course, they each have their weak points-moods, selfish tendencies, and lapses into yelling and quarreling. As followers of Jesus, you and I aim to grow in virtue and overcome our own negative traits. As...

After nearly five decades in academia, and five and a half years as a dean at a public university, I exit with a three-part piece of wisdom for those who work in higher education: do your job; don't try to do someone else's job, as you are unlikely to be qualified; and don't let anyone else do your job. In other words, don't confuse your academic obligations with the obligation to save the world; that's not your job as an academic; and don't surrender your academic obligations to the agenda of any non-academic constituency — parents, legislators, trustees or donors....

Encouraging schoolchildren to experiment with oral sex could prove the most effective way of curbing teenage pregnancy rates, a government study has found. Pupils under 16 who were taught to consider other forms of 'intimacy' such as oral sex were significantly less likely to engage in full intercourse, it was revealed.

The Power Grab of the NEA by: William R. Alford, November 28, 2003 In the book Power Grab, we find that the National Education Association (NEA) has sued teachers for revealing its political activities to their colleagues. Teachers who are reluctant to participate in strikes sometimes face violence. One found her cats and dog dead near her home. Strikebreaking substitute teachers have been pelted with eggs, spat upon, and had their vehicles damaged. While on the way to class, a 12-year-old Los Angeles girl was struck by a rock meant for a scab's car. The author, Dr. G. Gregory Moo,...

Santa Cruz is a large, semiarid, semirainy region in eastern Bolivia, bordering Brazil and Paraguay. The province is best known as the last stop on the revolutionary trail of Ernesto "Che" Guevara, the Argentine Marxist and medical doctor who caught a bullet there. But Santa Cruz is also the first stop on a different trail, taken by Kara Kemerling of Austin, a twentysomething product of the conservative religious proving ground at Baylor University. Almost two years ago, Kemerling left her comparatively comfortable existence in Texas, determined to become a missionary. To reach Santa Cruz, you take a big Pullman bus...
