An elderly Smithtown woman died yesterday after a sport utility vehicle hit her, Suffolk police said. The woman, Phyllis Weisz, 78, was standing at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Main Street in Smithtown about 12:15 p.m., police said. A witness saw Weisz bend over to pick up something just before she was struck by a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe as it made a right turn onto Main Street from Lawrence Avenue, police said.
