An elderly Smithtown woman died yesterday after a sport utility vehicle hit her, Suffolk police said.

The woman, Phyllis Weisz, 78, was standing at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Main Street in Smithtown about 12:15 p.m., police said. A witness saw Weisz bend over to pick up something just before she was struck by a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe as it made a right turn onto Main Street from Lawrence Avenue, police said.

Weisz suffered head and neck trauma, police said. She was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver, Christopher Lafferman, 33, of Clifton, N.J., was not charged. Police said he had a green light, and that no alcohol or drug use was involved.

The Tahoe was impounded for a safety check and the investigation will continue, police said.

We're just going to have to lock up all these SUV's before they kill everybody.

They make it sound like the SUV was at fault! The MSN has gone from dominant coup maker to silly and laughable!

I don't get it. Was the victim bending over in the street near the corner? The writer doesn't say the SUV jump the curb.

Well, if she was hit by one of those "Prius" tin cans, we might be reading about the injured driver when his car was totalled hitting a pedestrian. /sarc

FWIW, a pedestrian is more likely to be seriously injured or killed if struck by an SUV than they are by a passenger car.

Something SUV and other light truck owners should keep in mind, but often don't.

They make it sound like the SUV was at fault!

Additionally they added that the driver was not charged, that he had a green light, and that there was no alcohol or drugs invloved. Must've been the SUV then !

Why is it when you hear that a car hit a pedestrian or a truck ran off the road and hit a house, no one makes a big deal about the car or truck being evil, but when an SUV is involved, Rush, et al act like it is some liberal plot to make SUVs evil. I never understood that and it sounds stupid when Rush or FReepers make a big deal out of it. This is just the way people talk or write stories. Get over it.

God rest the poor woman who is the actual subject of this story.

My elderly aunt died on Long Island last year in a similar fashion, and I would hate to read these comments in a thread about her accident.

Probably because light trucks do more damage.

They'd be okay, if everybody would follow "Elkfersupper's Lug-Nut-Count-Right-Of-Way rule"

Whoever has the most lug nuts has the right-of-way. Works wonders for me, and all the ships at sea.
