Sunday, February 8, 2009 11:08 PM ESTHe's back from Iraq -- again I'm back. And understandably, everyone has questions. Most often asked is, "How was it?" Long, hot, hard and sometimes dangerous. Once again, I am greeted by countless people who tell me that they have read my articles and got a real feel for what is happening in Iraq. One older gentleman said that he was reminded of Ernie Pyle writing during World War II. I'm humbled by the comparison. I hope, as Pyle did, to have been able to bring the experiences of our soldiers home to you....

Chaplain Tells Of U.S. Building Schools And Good Will In Iraq By Greg Jefferson When a 19-year-old soldier was killed last November in Iraq, the miserable job of going through his belongings fell to Rabbi Carlos Huerta. But what the Army major and chaplain found heartened him. "He had pictures of the children," Huerta said during a talk Sunday afternoon on the North Side. The photos showed beaming youngsters in the Iraqi city of Mosul. They'd been won over by the new schools, clinics and hospitals that U.S. soldiers built, said Huerta, the Jewish chaplain at the U.S. Military Academy...

When this milestone was relayed to another author, the response was unexpectedly nasty: "But did you see the comments about the book on Amazon.com?"A schoolmate became a tenured university professor. A few years later, another schoolmate commented, "He hasn't published anything lately."A lawyer leaves private practice for a senior in-house position at a non-profit corporation. How long should we wait before deciding if the Iraq project is a success? And, what is success? Earlier this week, senior Bush officials called for patience on the matter, although they surely know that patience is not America's strong suit. In fact, we are the least patient people in the world. Long, steady, incremental gains is not what we are brought up to admire. Our heroes are soldiers and ball players, not diplomats and gardeners. We like maximum, full bore, explosive action -- followed by glorious victory and exhaustion. (Some nasty Frenchmen even suggest that our lovemaking adheres to...
