NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Jaime Alas scored in stoppage time and El Salvador ousted the United States from Olympic qualifying Monday night with a 3-3 tie. The Americans had to win to reach Saturday's semifinals in Kansas City, Kan., and they led 3-2 on Joe Corona's goal in the 68th minute. But Alas scored his goal off the hands off keeper Sean Johnson to stun the Americans, who missed the Olympics for the second time since 1976.

BERLIN - The local World Cup coordinator for Berlin shot himself in the head hours after Sunday's final in an apparent suicide attempt. Police spokeswoman Claudia Schulz on Tuesday confirmed newspaper reports that 65-year-old Juergen Kiessling had shot himself. She said there was no indication anyone else was involved, and she had no information on a possible motive. The Bild daily reported Kiessling remains in a Berlin hospital. Kiessling's duties for the World Cup included coordinating the "Fan Mile" near Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, a spot where hundreds of thousands of fans watched the matches on giant screens during the monthlong...

Thu Jun 29, 7:31 AM ET BEIJING (Reuters) - A Beijing soccer fan refused to let the small matter of his house burning down disturb his enjoyment of Tuesday's World Cup match between France and Spain. A fire broke out in a hutong in the center of the Chinese capital at 3am local time Wednesday -- kickoff time in Hanover -- and gutted the traditional courtyard dwelling, the Beijing Daily Messenger reported. "When the neighbors shouted 'fire!', I took my little baby and ran out in my nightclothes," the man's wife told the paper. "My husband paid no attention to...

Long unknown at home and ridiculed abroad, the United States isn't being written off in the soccer world anymore. But the Americans will need to pull together as team to get past their tough World Cup group. A motorcade of police cars with flashing blue lights and a massive, unmarked FIFA bus has announced the arrival and often rapid departure of the US soccer team in Hamburg over the past week. But when the American players are on their own, it's a different story. On Friday, star midfielder DaMarcus Beasley sat, blissfully anonymous, at a sidewalk café outside the Americans'...
