A longtime Maryland Democrat and one of the longest-serving members in Congress survived a stroke over the weekend his team announced Tuesday. Rep. Steny Hoyer, 85, has represented Maryland in Congress since first being elected in 1981. 'On Sunday night, August 11, Rep. Steny Hoyer experienced a mild ischemic stroke and sought medical treatment,' Hoyer spokesperson Margaret Mulkerrin wrote in a statement. 'Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no lingering symptoms. He expects to resume his normal schedule next week.' 'Mr. Hoyer’s wife and family extend their deepest thanks to his medical team,' the statement concluded.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) on Thursday evening backtracked on his position that impeaching President Donald Trump after the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report would not be “worthwhile at this point” after his left-wing primary challenger called him a coward and stated that she was “in favor” of impeachment. Hoyer told CNN earlier in the day that “the American people will make a better judgment” about whether to remove Trump than Congress in the 2020 election. “Based on what we have seen to date, going forward on impeachment is not worthwhile at this point. Very frankly, there...

The Republican Party is currently trying to sort out an internal battle between its dwindling stock of moderates who are occasionally willing to work with Democrats, and its hard-right base, which views compromise with Democrats in general, and President Obama in particular, as heresy. But in a speech Monday, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the second-ranking Democrat in the House showed that there are significant fissures in the Democratic Party as well. Hoyer, though nominally Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s second-in-command, is starkly different from Pelosi and many others on the party’s left wing when it comes to economic and fiscal issues....

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is warning that some of his Democratic colleagues are being threatened with violence when they go back to their districts — and he wants Republicans to stand up and condemn the threats. The Maryland Democrat said more than 10 House Democrats have reported incidents of threats or other forms of harassment about their support of the highly divisive health insurance overhaul vote. Hoyer emphasized that he didn’t have a specific number of threats and that was just an estimate. TheFederal Bureau of Investigation, Capitol Police and sergeant at arms briefed Democrats behind closed doors today...
  • Video: Steny Hoyer Not So Thrilled With “Slaughter Rule” When GOP Was in

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) has been all over the media the past couple of days defending he and Pelosi’s apparent decision to use a procedural rule to “deem” the Senate health bill passed as part of the reconciliation package, rather than holding an actual floor vote on the bill. This “deem and pass” strategy, also known as a self-executing rule (or the “Slaughter rule”), could be critical for the House leadership to corral enough votes from reluctant Democrats. I have just one word for Rep. Hoyer – HYPOCRITE.
