“Entrepreneurs embody the promise of America: the idea that if you have a good idea and are willing to work hard and see it through, you can succeed in this country. And in fulfilling this promise, entrepreneurs also play a critical role in expanding our economy and creating jobs.” – President Barack Obama, January 31, 2011 The recent White House announcement of a new government program to promote entrepreneurship must signify that the Obama Administration finally “gets it” about job creation and economic recovery, right? Certainly free-market conservatives can agree with the President’s inspiring words. But … The problems, as...

A long time ago, I had to make a really tough choice: invest in an MBA from New York University, or make do with my bachelors. I was newly married, had a child on the way, and didn’t have much in savings. The degree would set me back tens of thousands of dollars and take years to complete—especially if I did it part time. And I couldn’t imagine doing anything but programming computers for a living. So why learn finance, marketing, and operations management, I wondered? Well, I decided to enroll because my understanding of the business world lacked depth,...

Bring up the topic of economic stimulus and job creation, and you won't hear much about immigration. If the topic does arise, it's usually because somebody believes foreigners are taking U.S. jobs. It's time to bring the immigration question squarely into the debate over jobs. A change to immigration policy could help create jobs and rev up economic growth. It's a change that wouldn't be hard to bring about. I'm talking about the establishment of a Startup Founders Visa program. The program would make it easier for those with great ideas and the desire to start a company to live...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A company backed by investors linked to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is pressing regulators to speed up a review of its proposed $2 billion solar-energy complex, warning that delays would send a "chilling signal" to the emerging green power industry. But the California Energy Commission staff opposes the move, depicting it as an end run that could break apart a precedent-setting review of the planned solar site near the Mojave Desert Preserve. At the center of the dispute is a project widely viewed as a potential breakthrough in large-scale U.S. solar development. --snip-- The company says the...

Ninety-six percent of immigrant founders of technology and engineering companies between 1995 and 2005 held bachelor's degrees, and 74 percent held graduate or postgraduate degrees, according to a study the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation released Monday. Seventy-five percent of the highest degrees among immigrant entrepreneurs were in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, the Kauffman Foundation said in a release. Fifty-three percent of the immigrant founders of U.S.-based technology and engineering companies completed their highest degrees in U.S. universities. <A HREF="http://dc.bizjournals.com/event.ng/Type=click&FlightID=21264&AdID=30521&TargetID=1292&Segments=1,16,973,2183,3301,3622,3862,4117,4263,4611,4614,4829&Targets=3394,61,1292,2014,3078,3381,3619,3866,4009,4337,4344,4550&Values=25,30,46,50,60,72,84,93,100,110,150,155,202,295,333,473,565,736,775,830,872,894,949,951,959,960,961,962,980,994,996,997,1009&RawValues=GEOMAJORMETRO%2Corange%2520county%2CDOMAINTYPE%2C25%2CST_VERT_TOPIC%2Creal_estate__commercial&Redirect=http://www.tivol.com" target="_top"><IMG SRC="http://ll.bizjournals.com/ads/dc/tivol/Tivol_Cube_300_x_250_v3.gif" WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=250 BORDER=0></A> Researchers at Duke University and the University of California-Berkeley conducted the study, which included...

WASHINGTON: Indian immigrants to the United States account for 28 per cent of all foreign-founded private start-up companies in a climate dominated by migrant entrepreneurship, according to a new study. The study found that over the past 15 years, immigrants have started 1 in 4 (25 percent) US public companies that were venture-backed, representing a market capitalization of more than $500 billion. Topping that, a survey of private, venture-backed start-up companies in the US estimated that a staggering 47 percent have immigrant founders. In that group, "India was the most prevalent country of origin with 28 percent followed by the...

Operating system: Windows XP (Home) How do I get this infernal Adobe Photoshop Starter Edition 3.0 from auto-starting every time I boot up? I've tried everything but regedit, and frankly I don't want to. Windows Defender gives me the opportunity to remove/disable it from start-up, but the darn thing keeps coming back. Please post any comments relating to cleaning-up the Start-up function below; I have a lot to learn.

A project offering free voice mail to the homeless and poor to help them find jobs and stay in touch with family signed up 228 members during its launch. Project CARE started Thursday will be available in shelters around the city in the coming weeks. "It was a fairly easy service to offer since we already have built a high-end voice mail system for paying customers," said Craig Walker, chief executive of GrandCentral Communications. "So we thought, 'Hey, let's do some good with this.'" The startup company's paid voice mail product is scheduled to launch this summer, but access will...

ATHENS (Reuters) - Luxemburg-based Internet telephony firm Skype has shown that Europeans can build a $4 billion company in just over two years, but venture capitalists are wondering if it was a fluke or the start of a trend. Talent scouts gathered at the high-profile ETRE technology conference in Athens expressed optimism that European technology firms could be on the up again. "There are huge opportunities. It's only limited by our own creativity. Skype was actually a bellwether for a lot of European companies," said Tim Draper of venture capital fund Draper Fisher Jurvetson, which helped finance Skype. He basked...

With less than a week before the debut of the state's new $3-billion stem cell institute, intense behind-the-scenes debate is growing over who should head the agency and whether a Friday deadline for filling the post will allow the best candidates to be considered. The debate is expected to crest Monday when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and three other elected state officials must, under the tight deadlines set by the state's embryonic stem cell initiative, put forward their nominees to lead the new agency. On Friday, board members — many still to be named — are scheduled to meet in San...

Thursday, September 09, 2004 On Israeli technology and American outsourcing I saw an interesting piece on Israeli television (IBA News in English, via satellite) claiming that Israel is the second most important technology center after Silicon Valley in California. The statistics cited were startling. The number of new technology startups in Israel is roughly 25% of the number of those in the United States. In addition, the amount of venture capital invested in Israeli technology startups is also around 25% of thet in the United States. What makes these numbers so amazing is that Israel is a tiny nation of...

OK, I have a great line of products, a comprehensive business plan, initial markets worth ~ $17 - 20 Billion, patent protection, and a decent marketing plan. What I don't have is the capital for tooling, initial production run, and workspace.Does anyone have any experience with ACE-NET (a federal program for financing start-ups), or "Angel" sites? IF there are any freepers with VC experience, I would very much like to hear about your successes, failures, what did and did not work. All suggestions and comments are appreciated.
