On a system that runs Windows XP Home, I am thinking of installing Lavasoft's AdAware. I am running Spybot and am concerned that the two programs will conflict. Can both simultaneously run in the background? Does anyone have any experiences to share concerning this topic?

The average computer is packed with hidden software that can secretly spy on online habits, a study has found. The US net provider EarthLink said it uncovered an average of 28 spyware programs on each PC scanned during the first three months of the year. Spyware is a broad term for programs that hide on a person's computer without their knowledge. It has become so pervasive that lawmakers in the US are looking into ways to prevent or regulate it. Hidden away The Spy Audit by EarthLink reflects the results of scans involving over one million computers between January and...

I've got this evil spybot, undertonenet.com on my computer. Neither spybot search and destroy or lavasoft adaware removes it. I run them regularly. I suspect it comes from the drudgereport, fwiw.

Web surfers battling "spyware" face a new problem: so-called spyware-killing programs that install the same kind of unwanted advertising software they promise to erase. The problem has attracted dozens of companies seeking to profit by promising to root out the offending software. But some software makers are exploiting the situation, critics allege, turning demand for antispyware software into a launch pad for new spyware attacks. A small army of angry Web users has set up a...

In an effort to improve its corporate reputation, adware company Gator has launched a legal offensive to divorce its name from the hated term "spyware"--and so far its strategy is paying off. In response to a libel lawsuit, an antispyware company has settled with Gator and pulled Web pages critical of the company, its practices and its software. And other spyware foes are getting the message. "There is this feeling out there that they won the lawsuit, and people are starting to get scared," said one employee of a spyware-removal company, who asked not to be named. "We haven't been...

Heads up to Jim Rob and all. I clicked on a link on a post here at FR couple of days ago, and accidentaly got xupitor.com spyware installed on my computer! It looked harmless enough, and I thought I was going to a site to look at an article; but it changed my browser settings, tool bar, and added a bunch of "favorites", like online gaming sites, etc. Now, whenever I do a search, it directs me back to xupitor.com. This AM, I got some garbage, and a whole bunch of windows popping up behind my active window. My McCaffee...
