APPOMATTOX, Va. — A woman was not trying to kick the brother accused of killing her and seven other people out of the house they shared, a family attorney said Thursday. Christopher Speight, 39, was charged late Wednesday with one count of murder and is likely to face additional charges. The victims of Tuesday morning's rampage included Speight's sister, Lauralee Sipe, along with Sipe's husband, 16-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. The others were the 16-year-old's friend and her parents, who were either dropping off or picking up their daughter, and a third teen. Police have refused to offer a motive...

Bomb technicians discovered a "multitude" of explosives Wednesday at the home of a man suspected in the shooting deaths of eight people, and crews were detonating the devices as more details about the gunman came to light.

Appomattox Virginia was the scene of a shooting this afternoon when one lone gunman, now identified as Appomattox resident Christopher Speight, 39, shot one man at first near Route 703 on Snapps Mill Road. (see a photo of Christopher Speight) Speight then went on to shoot eight people. Over 100 law enforcement officials surrounded the suspect in a wooded area.

What does Christopher Bryan Speight, the suspect in eight shooting deaths in Appomattox have in common with Michael McClendon, Paul Michael Merhige, Troy Brake, Frank Garcia, William Maxwell, George Sodini and too many others? All, like Speight, are accused or have been convicted in the last couple years of multiple murders. And all, like Speight, had concealed carry permits. This appears to be a growing trend - perhaps because states have been loosening requirements to receive a concealed carry permit? Anybody have other ideas why so many perpetrators of recent shooting sprees have been concealed carry holders?
