  • An Ahistorical, Surprisingly Dull Mess, Hulu’s ‘The Great’ Is Anything But

The show thinks it's subversive and daring with its humor, but the only shock is how relentlessly dull it is, regardless of themes and imagery. For those who shudder at historical inaccuracies in biopics, stay far away from Hulu’s “The Great.” The show does not even pretend to care about historical accuracy, opening each episode with the caveat, “an occasionally true story.” The show loosely tells the story of the early days of Catherine the Great’s (Elle Fanning) marriage to Emperor Peter III of Russia (Nicholas Hoult) as she plots a coup to kill her incompetent and cruel husband to...

The District of Columbia's congresswoman on Thursday introduced a bill to strip the NFL of its federal antitrust protection as long as it allows Washington's football team to use the name "Redskins," a moniker some see as racist. Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton said the National Football League and Washington's football team "should not be benefitting financially from federal antitrust exemptions while they continue to promote a disparaging moniker that has been found by legal authorities to be a racial slur." A federal judge in July upheld an earlier decision by the United States Patent and Trademark Office that the...

Ten members of Congress are urging the Washington Redskins to change their name because it is offensive to many Native Americans. The representatives said Tuesday that they've sent letters to Redskins owner Dan Snyder, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins sponsor FedEx, and the other 31 NFL franchises. The letter to Snyder says that "Native Americans throughout the country consider the 'R-word' a racial, derogatory slur akin to the 'N-word' among African Americans or the 'W-word' among Latinos." Among the group sending the letters are the leaders of the Congressional Native American Caucus, Tom Cole, R-Okla., and Betty McCollum, D-Minn.
  • “View” Lefties Can’t See Why Child Porn for Teens on MTV Might Be a Problem

The smug certainty with which leftists insist that they're better people than conservatives has always been an interesting phenomenon. We’re asked to believe that our opponents are more moral, more responsible, more enlightened, and more sensitive than we are one minute…and one of our betters turns around and asks what the big deal is about some outrageous case of moral degeneracy the next. Such is the case of the latest pontifications from The View co-host Joy Behar. In a discussion of Skins, the new MTV show which might have broken child pornography laws by filming actors as young as 15...

We are robbing children of their innocence, leaving them jaded and seeking the next adrenalin rush instead of lasting happiness. We take care to prevent harmful material from entering their lungs or stomachs, but we ignore what enters their eyes and ears. Perhaps the reason we have so many childish adults is that they had no chance to be children when they were young. Sexualized second-graders, degrading TV shows, and self-anointed “artists” supporting a child molester are symptoms. The disease is our failure to impart Judeo-Christian values to the next generation. Do you really believe that people who were sexualized...

What if one day you went to work and there was a meeting to discuss whether the project you were working on crossed the line into child pornography? You’d probably think you had ended up in the wrong room. And you’d be right. Last week, my colleague Brian Stelter reported that on Tuesday, the day after the pilot episode of “Skins” was shown on MTV, executives at the cable channel were frantically meeting to discuss whether the salacious teenage drama starring actors as young as 15 might violate federal child pornography statutes.

Last week, the PTC warned parents that MTV’s new show Skins – which debuted last night at 10:00 p.m. ET, only 9:00 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones – was “the most dangerous program ever” for children. The first episode proves we were right! And this content was paid for by Taco Bell. Here are just two brief examples of the dialogue from last night’s episode: Stanley: "It's totally normal for a kid of 16 not to have had sex." Tony: "It's embarrassing, Stan. So we go to a party and get some girl racopiously spliffed up, in...

The Washington Redskins interviewed assistant coach Gregg Williams for their head coaching vacancy Saturday, granting an audience to the leading in-house candidate for the job. A person familiar with the selection process said Williams became the third person to interview with owner Dan Snyder, who is seeking a replacement for Joe Gibbs. The person also said the Redskins are interested in Indianapolis Colts assistants Jim Caldwell and Ron Meeks, either of whom would put the Redskins in compliance with the "Rooney Rule" that requires at least one minority to be interviewed. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the...

SACRAMENTO -- In addressing an issue that professional sports teams such as the Washington Redskins have faced and resisted in recent years, the California State Assembly passed a bill Thursday that would require the state's middle and high schools to drop "Redskins" as their mascots if the bill becomes law. The Assembly passed the bill 43-20 after a lengthy, passionate debate about Native American-related mascot names that are common throughout California and the nation. If passed by the Senate and signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the ban would begin in January 2006 and make California the first state to issue...
