2 sides mark anniversary of Roe v. Wade with marches in S.F. Thousands of protesters on both sides of the abortion issue clashed in San Francisco in rival demonstrations Saturday, the 32nd anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. In dueling marches, about 6,000 antiabortion activists in the Walk for Life West Coast were jeered and harangued by about 3,000 advocates for abortion rights, some waving wire hangers. Walk for Life organizers Dolores Meehan and Eva Muntean said they knew holding an antiabortion rally in the liberal bastion of San Francisco would certainly spark outrage....

Walk For Life Makes Huge Point During San Francisco March By William A. Mayer, Editor & Publisher - PipeLineNews It may have been 32 years late in coming, but January 22, 2005 will forever be a day that lives in infamy for San Francisco's smug leftist political establishment, for on that cold clear Saturday afternoon, 10,000 peaceful activists gave notice in the heart of the city of Gomorrah that the issue of abortion will be contested everywhere - nationwide - that there are no longer any safe-havens for those who advocate infanticide. Coming from South of San Diego and...

Thank you for helpng us make pro-life history in San Francisco. It was a truly awesome day. We look forward to seeing you again in 2006. The San Francisco Police Department was SUPERB: Professional, kind, friendly and very protective. Some of them even started the day with us at the Archbishop's St. Mary's Cathedral Mass. The SFPD estimates that there were 7,500-8,000 of us and around 2,000-3,000 protestors. The mainstream media certainly won't report this. God bless you all.

SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco may become the first city in the nation to charge shoppers for grocery bags. The city's environmental commission is expected to ask the mayor and board of supervisors Tuesday to consider a 17-cent-per-bag charge on paper and plastic grocery bags. Their goal is to reduce plastic bag pollution. Environmentalists say plastic bags jam machinery, pollute waterways and often end up in trees. Officials believe that the city spends five-point-two cents per bag annually for street litter pickup and one-point-four cents per bag for extra recycling costs. But grocers and bag manufacturers argue that many people already...

SAN FRANCISCO — Activists on both sides of the abortion issue marched in demonstrations across the country Saturday to mark the 32nd anniversary of the historic U.S. Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal. The anniversary came amid speculation that retirements on the Supreme Court could alter its makeup and its long-standing defense of the Roe v. Wade decision during President Bush's second term. Chief Justice William Rehnquist is 80 and suffering from thyroid cancer. In San Francisco, thousands of abortion opponents marched on the city's waterfront, chanting slogans like "Women deserve better," while abortion rights supporters tried to drown...

SAN FRANCISCO - Anti-abortion demonstrators marched through hostile territory Saturday, running the gauntlet past jeering abortion rights activists in one of America's most liberal cities. Thousands of abortion opponents marked the 32nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade by chanting, singing and marching along San Francisco's waterfront Embarcadero as abortion rights supporters tried to drown them out. Anti-abortion activists began their rally with a prayer and a singing of the national anthem, then took to the streets chanting "Women deserve better." The repetition was soon overtaken by people lining the streets hoisting signs and green "pro choice" balloons, yelling, "Pro-life, that's...

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Court TV legal analyst Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, are filing for divorce after three years of marriage. In a joint statement issued by the mayor's office Wednesday, the Newsoms cited the strain posed by their high-profile careers on opposite ends of the country as the reason for the split. "It is with great sadness that we announce today that we have decided to end our marriage. Unfortunately, the demands of our respective careers have made it too difficult for us to continue as a married couple," they wrote. "Over the...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) 12.21.04, 1:45p -- A rare but serious sexually transmitted disease has turned up in a few patients in San Francisco, prompting health officials to issue a public warning. The disease is a form of chlamydia, a common sexually transmitted infection. But this particular disease can cause scarring of the genitals and colon and cause lymph glands near the groin to swell or burst. While the illness is rarely seen outside of poor, tropical nations, it has recently turned up in the Netherlands. Doctors in Rotterdam reported 92 cases among gay men there during a 17 month period...

In an indication of the depths of hopelessness the city of San Francisco has reached through its suicidal liberalism, the profile of the police chief of San Francisco reads like a parody of liberal positions that you would find lampooned in an Onion article. Given a political appointment that obviously sought to conform to every liberal creed, it is no wonder the police department of San Francisco is unable to cope with the rising crime wave in that city. Here it is in full: ********************************************** Heather Fong, Chief of Police, SFPD Born in 1956 and raised in San Francisco, Chief...

Democrats shoot themselves in the foot again City residents will vote next year on a proposed weapons ban that would deny handguns to everyone except law enforcement officers, members of the military and security guards. If passed next November, residents would have 90 days to give up firearms they keep in their homes or businesses. The proposal was immediately dismissed as illegal by a gun owners group. The measure — submitted Tuesday to the Department of Elections by some city supervisors — would also prohibit the sale, manufacturing or distribution of handguns, and the transfer of gun licenses, according to...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco supervisors want voters to approve a sweeping handgun ban that would prohibit almost everyone except law enforcement officers and security guards from possessing firearms in the city. The measure, which will appear on the municipal ballot next year, would affect residents who keep guns in their homes or businesses, Bill Barnes, an aide to Supervisor Chris Daly, said Wednesday. It would also prohibit the sale, manufacturing and distribution of handguns in San Francisco, as well as the transfer of gun licenses. Under the language of the measure, police officers, security guards, members of the...

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration is expected to scrap the costly signature design for the Bay Bridge's new eastern span and will instead recommend building a simple skyway, sources close to the negotiations said Thursday. The shift away from a single-tower suspension span to a viaduct, similar in concept to the San Mateo and Dumbarton bridges, is expected to be announced today at a press conference in San Francisco, sources in state and local government said on condition they not be identified. The decision to go with a skyway brings the state all the way back to the original design for...

Two dozen San Francisco schoolkids sporting white turtlenecks and Santa hats got a very un-Christmaslike civics lesson the other day when they showed up at Union Square hoping to delight Christmas shoppers with holiday carols. "They just wanted to set up next to the Christmas tree and sing,'' said Donna Vargas, one of the parents who escorted the fifth- and sixth-graders from San Francisco Day School on Friday's outing. Instead, they got the boot. Seems they didn't have a city permit -- so after a brief run-in with the park's security, the kids were shooed away. "How can children not...

San Francisco's Commission on the Environment delayed Tuesday a decision on a groundbreaking proposal to levy a 17-cent fee on grocery bags provided to shoppers in the city, saying the plan needed more time to be strengthened and improved. On a 4-3 vote, the commission continued the issue to its Jan. 25 meeting. The commission is weighing whether to urge Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Board of Supervisors to pass the bag tax into law, which would be the first of its kind in the United States. The fee, which would be charged against grocery stores and ultimately passed on...

Alarmed that The City, often viewed as the nation's gay capital, has only about 25 gay male officers in its 2,100-strong police department, cops have undertaken their first recruitment drive specifically targeting this community. For the past month, ending today, cops have targeted Castro District bars and gyms, and established a recruitment table at Castro and 18th streets, in hope of communicating that the SFPD welcomes gays and lesbians. Some 350 men and 150 women have taken applications from the Castro site, which is part of a broader SFPD recruitment drive. According to the gay police officers' advocacy group San...

FAT MIKE, musician Fat Mike is not a happy man. "When I see a Bush-Cheney bumper sticker on a car, it's time to slash their tires," he says, calling from the offices of his Fat Wreck Chords label. "When I run into a tourist with a Southern accent, I tell them to get the f -- out of San Francisco. We're at a culture war. I'm angry at them." Leading up to the election, the member of Bay Area punk bands NOFX and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes did more to mobilize progressive and young voters than certain red-state...
