Activists March on Roe v. Wade Anniversary

SAN FRANCISCO — Activists on both sides of the abortion issue marched in demonstrations across the country Saturday to mark the 32nd anniversary of the historic U.S. Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal.

The anniversary came amid speculation that retirements on the Supreme Court could alter its makeup and its long-standing defense of the Roe v. Wade decision during President Bush's second term. Chief Justice William Rehnquist is 80 and suffering from thyroid cancer.

In San Francisco, thousands of abortion opponents marched on the city's waterfront, chanting slogans like "Women deserve better," while abortion rights supporters tried to drown them out with their own rallying cries.

Condoms were tossed at the anti-abortion marchers, and people waved coat hangers in a reference to the days of back-alley abortions.

San Francisco Supervisor Tom Ammiano said he thought it was ironic that anti-abortion activists chose the liberal West Coast city as the site for their demonstration.

Back alley abortions were a scam to get abortion legalized. It was not all that prevalent.

Back alley abortions were never responsible for as many deaths as legalized abortion.

Other than the money, what is the benefit to the abortionists and their victims?

Is it just a form of birth control so women can be irresponsible about sex?

It's difficult to believe in this so-called enlightened era why there is any necessity for abortion.

Nonetheless, it is very important to enshrine in law protection for those who abortionists kill.

The number I heard for illegal abortions in America was 100,000. Not certain for other countries.

How has access to "safe" (cough, cough, hack), legal abortion affected peoples' views about intimate relations? Was I the only kid who grew up in the 70's and 80's and saw people living together before marriage as wrong? It seems now even many conservatives have bought into fornication as a lifestyle. How has the ability to kill off the fruit of such unions encouraged the same? And if it did and does encourage them, by offering a "safe"ty net in the event Sally does become pregnant, how many MORE unplanned pregnancies have there been then there WOULD HAVE been had the original cultural taboos retained their rightful prominence?

I'm 100% anti-abortion. However, the latest tactic of the pro-life movement, "Women deserve better than abortion", is just the most inane, idiotical, and perverse slogan I have ever heard. If this is the best we can do then we are doomed. The pro-life movement is just bound and determined not to face the fact that women are the perpetrators, not the victims.

Just imagine if anyone said "Men deserve better than rape". Yet, abortion is a worse crime than rape. Oh, I forgot, in America, men are always the problem no matter what...

I am older than you. Married to the same girl for over 35 years. We would not be able to live if we were responsible for killing one of our own children.

It would have been bad enough had one of them died accidentally or from illness. Praise God they are all still with us and blessing us with grandchildren.

I can't believe woman are killing their own children. The problem I think, is that woman don't really like or trust the men they are having babies with.

How could you like or trust someone who drugs you to get sex?

Amber Fry had one kid out of wedlock and slept with Scott Peterson on the first date. Before the date she had the baby sitter prepared to stay all night. Sad.

You remember, then, the days when people spoke of divorce (a corollary to this discussion) in hushed tones. I long for a return to such days, though I cannot remember them.
