    United States Post Office
Imagine my surprise when I found the below notice in my mail box. The United States Post Office is now advertising primarily in Spanish, with English being a minor added language. Has it reached the point where we not only have to press 1 for English, but have to request our mail to come in English as well? And whose identity is the post office concerned about?

Vamos a ver, as we say down at Bo's Hardware Store. According to an ABC News "Good Morning America" poll, two thirds of Americans don't mind hearing Spanish spoken as a matter of course right here in the United States. I doubt this rather seriously, given the tendency of poll respondents to avoid saying anything that might make a polltaker say under his breath, "Racist, racist!" But the poll does bring to the fore a significant question: How much sense does it make for the United States to accommodate the widespread speaking of a tongue other than English in a...

Spanish speaking in the United States is widespread and accepted by most Americans. But a third who experience this language difference are troubled by it -- and they have distinctly more negative attitudes about immigrants and Hispanics generally. Just 10 percent of Americans concede any personal prejudice against Hispanics -- far fewer than the number who, in previous polls, have self-reported prejudice on the basis of race, against overweight people, or against Arabs and Muslims. Nonetheless, among the nearly eight in 10 who hear others who speak mainly in Spanish, a third say it bothers them. All told, 78 percent...

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Democrats running for president pledged last night to tackle immigration reform their first year in office, courting Hispanic voters in a live forum that offered little new substance. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York said she would add border patrols and consider physical barriers on both the northern and southern U.S. borders. She said she favors a "pathway to legalization," but her policy would focus on keeping families together. Univision, the nation's largest Spanish-language network, sponsored the forum..., Mrs. Clinton excoriated Republicans for doing a "great disservice" with their immigration proposals. "It is being...

WASHINGTON, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa: The clock started ticking today on thousands of jobs in the United States with the introduction of the Central American Free Trade Agreement, or CAFTA. Congress has only 90 days to reject this job-killing trade proposal. I call on my 1.4 million brothers and sisters in the Teamsters Union, along with working families across the United States and around the world, to mobilize against CAFTA and for job protections and basic international labor standards. The time constraints imposed by the fast track...
