Poll: Spanish Spoken Here--and Two-thirds Don't Mind
ABC News ^ | October 8, 2007 | Peyton M. Craighill

Spanish speaking in the United States is widespread and accepted by most Americans. But a third who experience this language difference are troubled by it -- and they have distinctly more negative attitudes about immigrants and Hispanics generally.

Just 10 percent of Americans concede any personal prejudice against Hispanics -- far fewer than the number who, in previous polls, have self-reported prejudice on the basis of race, against overweight people, or against Arabs and Muslims.

Nonetheless, among the nearly eight in 10 who hear others who speak mainly in Spanish, a third say it bothers them.

All told, 78 percent in this ABC News "Good Morning America" poll say they often or sometimes come into contact with people in this country who speak mainly Spanish rather than English -- including 55 percent who encounter it "often."

Did they poll Americans or illegals? The local McDonald's had a Spanish language menu up for a week before they quietly took it down.

A very carefully crafted phony poll.

And, oh yeah, you’re all xenophobic racists.

When Californians were asked if illegal immigration was a problem, 29% of those polled answered "yes".

71% replied, "No, la inmigración ilegal no es un problema."

False from the outset. Spanish speakers, as a general rule don't bother me a lot, but they do bother me. Worse, is the rise of advertising is Spanish that leave me feeling like a foreigner in my own country.

I'd like to feel like an American again, not a foreign visitor to Amexico!!

The one’s here legally are pissed at all the illegals. And unfortunately, since you can’t tell them apart until they speak, they’ll get lumped in with the illegals, once the shooting starts.

Ah ..the mythical 'hispanic' again. Does anyone know of a school that teaches 'Hispanish'? If all these 'hispanics' are here maybe we should learn their language - just a bit mind you, like to order food. Or to say, 'hey trim that hedge some more'. Then again, 'Latino' isn't much better, as they don't speak Latin.

(Why isn't a 'Hispanic' only someone from Hispaniola???)

The questions don't ask directly "do you think ALL Americans should speak English?", nor does it ask "do you believe American Citizens should be required to speak English"?

This poll is like asking "do you walk to work, or carry your lunch"?

Asking "are you prejudiced against Spanish-speaking people"? is NOT a legitimate evaluation of whether people want English to be spoken.

"The persistent inflow of Hispanic immigrants threatens to divide the United States into two peoples, two cultures, and two languages. Unlike past immigrant groups, Mexicans and other Latinos have not assimilated into mainstream U.S. culture, forming instead their own political and linguistic enclaves—from Los Angeles to Miami—and rejecting the Anglo-Protestant values that built the American dream. The United States ignores this challenge at its peril."

How the heck can you tell illegal immigrants by the way they speak?

Plenty of legals immigrants don’t speak English, particularly the older ones. Many of the working illegals speak very passable English.

I saw a line at my local library for people signing up for a free ESL class. Personally, I thought it would have been a good place for homeland security to be checking documentation, but what do I know. BTW, there weren’t only native Spanish speakers signing up, but they were the majority.

Though there are lots of efforts to muddy the water, there are some prejudices and bigotry that make little sense, and some that make a whole lot of sense.

For instance, a person can be of any race and speak any language, and still be polite, respectable, reasonable and honorable. Against them, *as a group*, prejudice is just stupid. You need to judge them as individuals.

However, if anyone, of any race and speaking any language, even if identical to yours, has a *creed*, such as being a neo-Nazi or a communist, or belong to a radical and violent religion or other organization, you can be, and in fact, should be prejudiced and even bigoted against them.

This is because a creed is not based on individual behavior, but is both embracing the known behavior of a group, their history, affiliating with what they do and advocate today, and with what they wish to do in the future. They, by their own actions, have elevated their creed as being more important to them than what they are as individuals.

So you are not being prejudiced or bigoted against them as individuals, but against their creed, which you find to be abhorrent. And this is perfectly legitimate.

And while some aged, squishy Moonbat hippy, who calls himself a communist, may personally think of communism in terms of peace, love, universal brotherhood, and crap like that; he is affiliating himself with Red Khmer and the Shining Path, the murderous Cultural Revolution, gulags and horrific mass murder.

So if he wants to affiliate with that, despite his protestations, he should be treated no differently than any other genocidal maniac. The only difference between him, a neo-Nazi, a real Nazi and a KGB agent, is that he and the neo-Nazi are just really stupid, naive, and idealistic.

Typically, such people always pretend that their most vicious compatriots were not the best examples of their faith, and that their *real* creed is all sweetness and light, but such pretenses are lies.

Nazism, communism, and much of Islam are permanently tainted, and such taint cannot be removed with denial, or pretense of victimization, or by comparison with other creeds or systems. They are abhorrent in their own right, and have done nothing to redeem themselves.

And therefore, those that embrace them automatically and permanently assume that mantle of evil, despite their protestations.

Against them, prejudice and bigotry are remembering history, in the hopes of never having to repeat it.

This is why I say you should never just beat up a neo-Nazi. For if they want to pretend to be a Nazi, then they should be willing to meet the same fate as the Nazis, hung from light poles.

And the same applies to a communist.

Another version of the “beating your wife” question; the respondent answers the way he knows the questioner wants the answer to be except for the few honest ones.
