  • Van Jones: We Don’t Want to See ‘No Gays’ Signs in This Country

CNN co-host Van Jones, in a roundtable discussion on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopolous” on Sunday, compared Arizona’s SB 1062—which has been vetoed by Gov. Jan Brewer—to the civil rights movement, saying, “We don’t want to see ‘no gays’ signs.” “The one great achievement of the last century, we took out of American lexicon six words, ‘we don’t serve your kind here.’ We took those words out. It took the civil rights movement to do it. Dr. King got killed trying to do it. ‘We don’t serve your kind here’ is not acceptable anymore. Those ‘no blacks allowed’ signs...
  • Brewer veto not best part of anti-gay bill’s demise

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)It took her a few (maddening) days, but Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) did the right thing. She vetoed that horrible bill that would have made it legal to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people by claiming that doing so violated their “sincerely held religious beliefs.” But this sensible and just end isn’t the best part of all this. Never before have I seen such full-throated tri-partisan opposition to a piece of anti-gay legislation. By tri-partisan I mean Democrats, Republicans and corporations. That Democrats were against the measure was a no-brainer. That Republicans and businesses joined them...

It was jarring to read the coverage of the new “anti-gay bill” passed by the Arizona Legislature and then look up the text of the instantly notorious SB 1062. The bill was roughly 998 pages shorter than much of legislation that passes in Washington, so reading it didn’t take much of a commitment. Clocking in at barely two pages, it was easy to scan for disparaging references to homosexuality, for veiled references to homosexuality, for any references to homosexuality at all. They weren’t there. A headline from The Week declared, “There is nothing Christian about Arizona’s anti-gay bill.” It would...
  • Gov. Brewer’s veto was about money and politics (Juan Williams Barf alert)

Don’t be fooled. Gov. Jan Brewer’s decision late Wednesday to veto Arizona’s controversial S.B. 1062 bill is about money and politics, not an endorsement of equal rights for gay people. Until opposition to the bill picked up steam by winning the backing of big business and the national Republican establishment the governor looked to be ready to support the social agenda of the religious right wing in her state by allowing the bill to become law. The bill passed the state senate last week on a strict party line vote with 17 of the governor’s fellow Republicans defeating 13 Democrats...
  • How Corporate America Forced Arizona Bill's Veto

When an important social issue intersected with business in Arizona, Corporate America decided it was time to take a stand. Voicing concern for their employees, customers and bottom lines, prominent companies from American Airlines to Verizon used threats of reduced business to help convince Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to veto legislation that would have allowed businesses to refuse service to gays based on the owner's religious beliefs. Companies have long spoken out about certain issues they felt threatened their bottom lines, such as taxation and the minimum wage. The strong opposition to the Arizona bill signals an acknowledgement by businesses...

The Arizona governor’s decision Wednesday to veto a bill widely seen as pitting religious protections against gay rights puts an end to two controversial amendments proposed by lawmakers. But it leaves standing the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which continues to empower individuals to sue when they believe state or local laws – including antidiscrimination laws – are violating their religious rights. In announcing her decision to veto the amendments, known as SB 1062, Gov. Jan Brewer (R) said that religious liberty is valued in Arizona. She added that the state also values the principle of nondiscrimination. How those two...

I think the Law while good intentioned concerning religious freedom and government overreach it was just plainly worded wrong. Here is a few things i would have changed. 1. Remove the word Religion - Religion is a hotword that causes all the MSM and weak spined RINO-crats to get all worked up in a tizzy dizzy. (I hate doing it, but it removes whole invalid as it may be sepration of church and state weasel words the libs like to use to get bills killed intheir tilted courts.) 2. Replace the word "Business" with "Artisan" 3. Rename the bill to...

SB 1062 is not about religious freedom, it's about forced labor. For the last few days, I, like many Americans, have been furious about SB 1062 . . . only I have been angry for a different reason than most. Opponents are angry because they think the bill is "mean" or that it allows discrimination against certain groups of people. Some people are even claiming that it somehow mandates discrimination. Supporters are angry because they don't like the idea that a private citizen can be forced to engage in a transaction that violates his or her religious beliefs. I am angry because I believe...

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a bill Wednesday that would have allowed businesses that asserted their religious beliefs the right to deny service to gay and lesbian customers. Opinions have been sharply divided over the politically charged measure, with both sides ramping up pressure on Brewer after the state's Republican-led Legislature approved the bill last week. Brewer said she made the decision she knew was right for Arizona.

Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday vetoed a Republican bill that set off a national debate over gay rights, religion and discrimination and subjected Arizona to blistering criticism from major corporations and political leaders from both parties. Brewer's decision defused a national furor over gay rights and religious freedom. The bill backed by Republicans in the Legislature was designed to give added protection from lawsuits to people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays. But opponents called it an open attack on gays that invited discrimination. The bill thrust Arizona into the national spotlight last week after both...

Yesterday, I wrote about the effort by the Arizona legislature to amend their state constitution to expand religious-liberty protection in the wake of lawsuits attempting to force participation in same-sex weddings by private businesses. The reaction of some to the bill described it as the next Jim Crow, without apparently knowing that Jim Crow mandated segregation rather than allow for private decisions on commerce. That hyperbolic and uninformed reaction doesn’t mean that the bill is good, though, and the retreat by Arizona politicians that once supported it — including one of its sponsors — sends a pretty big signal that...
