Elizabeth Heng nearly beat incumbent Democratic congressman Jim Costa in California’s open primaries in early June. The 53–47 outcome would have made her the darling of the national political media, had she been a Democrat. She will face Costa again in the general election in November. My colleague Alexandra DeSanctis wrote an excellent piece last month profiling the young, smart, 33-year-old Republican contender. So this happened yesterday. Heng’s campaign had tried to place this video as an ad on Facebook. It begins with her family’s roots — amidst the horror of Cambodian genocide. RIVERSIDE (CBS) — Is the state of California about to go “South”? Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone apparently thinks so, after proposing that the county lead a campaign for as many as 13 Southern California counties to secede from the state. Stone said in a statement late Thursday that Riverside, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono counties should form the new state of South California. The creation of the new state would allow officials to focus on securing borders, balancing budgets, improving schools and creating a vibrant economy, he said. “Our...

I know that Free Republic is California based and do not wish to say you should abandon your families who might live locally etc...but something serious has to be said here. My advice to any Republicans/Conservatives who live in California. You have great numbers to you...about 3 million plus. Do us greater justice...if you want to stay on the west coast for the views...move up to Oregon and Washington State. Their elections are won by razor thin margins up there. Imagine...if 200,000 of you lived in Washington State right now...Dino Rossi would be a clear winner and we would have...

SACRAMENTO -- It may be that moderate Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger offers the last hope to save California's state government from the ideologues in the Legislature who are running it into a ditch. If so, that hope appears to be slipping away. As his approval ratings tumble in the polls, Schwarzenegger backs away from one reform after another that he has proposed to solve the state's dire fiscal problems. Three of them have survived to appear on the Nov. 8 special election ballot. But the two that might do the most repair work -- reform of the budget process and redrawing...

Senator Tom McClintock The Debate for California’s Soul Remarks at the California Club for Growth PAC Annual Conference June 4, 2005 Thank you for that kind reception. Cardinal Spellman once said that public speaking brings out the best of Christian virtues in an audience. If you applaud, as you just did, at the beginning of a speech, it is an act of faith. If you applaud in the middle of a speech, it is an act of hope. And if you applaud at the end of a speech, it is an act of charity. So thank you for that act...

The latest attempt to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants in California cleared a Senate committee on Thursday but with provisions that restrict how the licenses can be used and what they would look like. The bill, by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would bring California into compliance with federal law. The REAL ID Act, signed by President Bush last week, requires states to verify that people who apply for a driver's license are in the country legally. It also allows states to choose whether to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants as long as they have different markings —...

SACRAMENTO -- After five months of failing to sway Democrats to his "year of reform," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has directed his political staff to prepare for a special-election campaign that would denigrate the California Legislature and its union benefactors. Escalating the governor's fight, chief political consultant Mike Murphy said Monday that Schwarzenegger may endorse an initiative that could hobble the money-raising machine of public employee unions. Murphy said the governor has asked him to conduct polling and voter focus groups on a so-called paycheck protection initiative. "Arnold has not touched the Legislature with a feather yet compared to what the...

SACRAMENTO -- Supporters of a ballot measure to take the redistricting process away from the Legislature received permission Tuesday to start circulating petitions -- for the second time. The measure is sponsored by Ted Costa, the political activist who first launched the recall drive against Gov. Gray Davis. "This is the other half of the recall," Costa said. "We changed the executive branch. Now we must change the legislative branch. They're entrenched and their first allegiance is to the special interests who give them money, and not the voters." The measure would create a panel of three retired judges, selected...
