The Orlando area continues to lock down its rank as the most dangerous place in the nation for pedestrians. “Still number one,” said Rayla Bellis, primary author of the 2021 Dangerous By Design report that analyzes the nation’s pedestrian deaths and compares statistics of metro areas and states. Orlando and a few other cities had slightly better numbers in the new report than in one two years ago. “These places were so dangerous to begin with that even seeing these improvements, they are still rising to the top,” Bellis said. The report by the pedestrian-safety advocacy groups Smart Growth America...

Police said this week's investigation began when they were called about 2:26 a.m. Monday to the intersection of Hillen and Forrest streets, just south of East Monument Street, where a man said he was just robbed at gunpoint by two men in a gray SUV. Soon after, an officer spotted the vehicle parked in the 2300 block of E. Monument and saw men dart inside the Safe Streets office. When officers eventually raided the office, they found guns, heroin, cocaine, and other items used in the manufacturing and sale of drugs, including cutting agents and scales, police said.

EditorialSecond Thoughts By: William W. Lawrence 11/11/2003Immediately following his landslide victory, Mayor John Street decided to cap the city's Safe Street money pit. Police district commanders received a memo the day after the election which stated, "Effective today, the Safe Streets overtime budget has been drastically cut."This could mean an exodus of honest folks leaving a crime-ridden city.*** Now that the election is over, the G-men may decide to cuff some white-collar criminals whose voices were heard on the famous bug in hizzoner's office. Look for overcrowding at Allenwood.***A special note to my good buddy Charlie Sexton. Congratulations on the...
